Aug 29, 2009 | Trip type: Business

My husband had business in Charlotte and the family went along since it immediately followed a family vacation in Atlantic Beach, NC. We thought as usual a Homewood Suites would be a good place to stay with the kids. When we arrived to our one bedroom suite, the room had a vile odor. It was so bad that I could not even remain in the room while my husband went to get another room for us. It smelled of either smoke or moldy wet scent. It also had a missing floor board in the kitchen area.
The front lobby staff was kind enough to up grade us to a two bedroom. This room was in such bad condition. It had a smell but not as bad as the first. The a/c was leaking and the floor was soaked in the bathroom area of the room with the king size bed. The shelves in the same room were falling down, the a/c in the second bedroom had a very loud squeaky sound and the ceiling fan wobbling violently in the low position. After a very long night in that room, we asked to be moved again to the 2 bedroom directly above us. It was better smelling, no a/c issue but had plumbing issues with the kitchen sink not turning off unless you worked on it for awhile and one of the bathrooms no hot water from the shower and the sink plumbing was not correct with hot and cold reversed.
We spoke to the manager who told us she just started at the property the week we stayed. She gave us points on our Hilton honors since my husband's company was paying for the room and a gift card to a restaurant. They tried to help out but knew that the condition of the hotel was in serious need of renovation.

We've stayed here 3 times and have always been very happy with the room/mattress comfort/cleanliness/breakfast offering. This last trip everything but the breakfast offering was the same. They have really cut back on breakfast items. In addition to continental breakfast, The only hot offerings were hash and scrambled eggs, waffles - it used to be that plus sausage/bacon/potatoes. And the orange juice was terrible - more water. I did complain about the juice and it was explained that sometimes the machine mixes it up wrong. The mgr gave me a bottle of oj from the sundry shop. I will stay here again.

The room we had was a two-room suite, with a king sized bed in one room (with the bathroom attached), and the living room/kitchen in the other. I'd probably stay here again, but only if we got it at a really good rate. I don't think I'd pay more than $80/night.

Pros: I loved having a celing fan in the bedroom, and the bed itself was pretty comfortable. Nice hotel staff, good location to be able to navigate from. Not a whole lot within walking distance, which would have been nice, but not a breaking point for me. The property definitely looks like it used to be an aprtment complex...which really isn't a big deal. It had a nice-looking pool, although I never got to use it.

Cons: Our smoke detector was dismantled and hanging down from the ceiling, which wasn't exactly safe. We had issues adjusting the A/C at first. The room was *WAY* too hot when we arrived. I don't remember what it was set on, but it was not high enough for the 100+ degrees it was outside. We quickly adjusted it, but when we moved the A/C switch it colder, it automatically moved the heat switch to hotter. Huh? We finally worked it out and got the room cooled off. The bathroom was pretty small, and our tub was stained and there was tape on the door keeping the latch part from coming off. Easy enough to fix...but just weird.... The buildings were horribly numbered though, and it took us forever to find our room!

  • Liked — The ceiling fan in the bedroom and the view of the lake
  • Disliked — Slow check-in, not within walking distance to much

Aug 13, 2006 | Trip type: Family

After scanning several hotels in the area to attend a family reunion, we managed to find a pretty good deal at the Homewood Suites by Hilton. I read the reviews..(and have even written a few myself...good and bad). But I have to admit, the hotel was better than I expected. First, it was right around the corner from the reunion host hotel, which was very convenient. Also convenient was a huge variety of restaurants and shopping. When we arrived, the room we booked wasn't quite ready, but to compensate, they upgraded our 1-BR suite to a 2-BR/2 BTH suite with all the amenities. Total check-in time was less than 2 minutes. The room did have that "old" kinda smell when you entered, but it was tolerable (and forgotten after a few minutes). The rooms were clean, so were the bathrooms. The beds were comfortable. The property appeared to have been an apartment complex at one point. Our room was right on the front on the 1st level, so we were able to park right in front of our door. We did experience some noise, but not from the street (at times, we could hear the heavy footsteps of guests above us). Our kids loved the pool. The pool area was fairly clean and accommodating. The complimentary breakfast was decent enough...a couple of hot items (bacon, sausage, eggs, and/or biscuits) with the usual waffles and all the other compliments that come with it..breads, pastries, cereals, hot cereals, etc., etc. If the hotel is fully booked, it will get crowded during breakfast. Our last couple of days saw a huge reduction in the number of guests, since the weekend was over, so breakfast from that point on was pretty good.....hardly anyone around. Not many other complaints....other than communication with the hotel staff (it can get a little frustrating when the staff doesn't understand simple requests). It's not the Ritz Carlton, but for the same price, we would probably visit there again.

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the last 10 or 11 years. I would give my first few visits 4 or 5 stars. But my latest stay was dissapointing. The staff at the desk was friendly.

The room was not exactly clean. When we unfolded the sofa bed a menagerie of stuff fell out on the floor. The appliances were showing their age and the fridge had a foul odor. The bathroom did not have a crisp look to it, there was buildup in the corners, etc. There was a missing tile.

We asked for a quite room, overlooking the pond if possible. Well, we were overlooking the pond so I guess that is 1/2 right. We were right next to a set of stairs and a noisy sidewalk that kept busy well into the night. We checked in early in the afternoon and you would think that a quiter room would have been available.

They were having an unseasonably warm weekend during our stay. The air conditioning did not work. Of course I did not realize this until after my two children were asleep so there was no changing rooms at that point.

We left early and did not complete our stay at this hotel. I figured if we were going to have to change rooms we might was well change hotels as well.
