“No issues, but nothing spectacular”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

The Chapel Hill University Inn is a convenient hotel close to the University of North Carolina campus. However there is nothing that sets this hotel apart, and there are little things that could use improvement. There is a sports theme to the hotel, and is popular around game days. The hotel is located across the street from a shopping center and several restaurants.

Check-in is fast, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. There is free coffee and snacks in the lobby. They also sell UNC memorabilia, however I don't know what their prices are like compared to elsewhere. There is ample parking around the hotel, so you can practically park in front of your room. However I don't know if it is an issue of small spaces or people just don't understand the idea of the two white lines, as you will find a lot of cars taking up two spots.

Where the hotel could use some work is with the room. I had a handicap assessable room (the only nonsmoking room available) on the ground floor. Fortunately I didn't need the features, as the handicap parking was off to the side and not in front of the room. Upon first impression, the room looked nice. However by the second night it became apparent what the issues were. The bathroom mirror is slanted to the side and not directly in front of the mirror. You basically hand to take a step to the left to look into the mirror and back to use the sink. For a handicapped person this could pose a problem. Also, you had to force the door to the bathroom closed past the bed. The door wouldn't close without force against the mattress. There was also a musty smell to the bathroom that you couldn't really get rid of. The pillows were a little too big for my liking, which made sleeping a problem. Noise however is not an issue, even being next to the highway.

The hotel has a shuttle to the UNC campus, but doesn't run on game days. However there is a shuttle service leaving from the University Mall by Dillard's for $5 round-trip. There is also a restaurant co-located with the hotel, the Time-Out Bar and Restaurant. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. However there is no free breakfast for staying at the hotel.

While there were no major concerns, the University Inn is not one that I'd likely stay at again unless there were no other options available. If you can get a good price, than it might be worth it.

We really appreciate your feedback. We will look into the situation you encountered in your guest room, thanks for bringing it to our attention.

We do agree that we are not a bells and whistles hotel. What we DO offer are clean, comfortable guest rooms, a friendly and helpful staff and great location. And we offer a full service hotel experience with affordable rates that won't break the budget.

Our shuttle is available to transport guests to designated stops around town, but it is true that we do not run on game days. There is a lot of traffic congestion and we could never serve the needs of all of our guests to get them to/from the games in an 11 passenger van. The town always suggests folks use Tar Heel Express as a more efficient method of getting to the games.

Again, thanks for your comments and we hope to see you again the next time you are in Chapel Hill!

clean rooms, microwave, fridge, good location and they accept dogs, we will definely stay here again. I wonder though why tripadvisor insists on 200 characters for their reviews (which is why I asked the question)

My father recently had medical appointments at the UNC Dental school. We had two rooms on the first floor of the hotel and stayed two evenings. Both of our rooms were quiet, clean, and well appointed- nothing fancy just comfortable. The front desk was outgoing and suggested restaurants for dinner- several within walking distance. We parked parked directly in front of our room which make it easy to load and unload luggage. I was able to avoid parking charges at the medical center by riding the hotel shuttle to and from appointments. I selected this hotel for the discounted rate for UNC medical patients and the complimentary shuttle service to the UNC Hospital/ Dental School. We will stay again for future appointments.

Room Tip: Ask for first floor if you are traveling with a medical patient.

My daughter is a student at UNC and we come into town to see her and attend different things. I really like this hotel because it's clean and very close to the campus. The people are always friendly. I have stayed here 5 times so far and will definitely be back.

I stayed at this hotel for an overnight. The room was comfortable and coffee was available in the lobby. For those that what a night cap there is a sports bar in the lobby. Did not have an early breakfast, but did have some treats on the bed when I checked in. Had to return to hotel for check out, because lobby was not 24 hours. Oh, well!

The hotel is dirty and loud. The floors in the rooms feel saturated with filth, almost greasy. Woak up with bites in my legs (not sure from what). People are loud outside of the rooms. Stay at your own risk. A days inn is across the street and might be a better option.

Room Tip: go somewhere else

First of all, don't believe what you read on the website... The website said that the hotel was closed permanently. I let the front desk know that when we got there. Site needs updating. Luckily, we followed our instincts and our confirmed reservation and got there to find our great room.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Chapel Hill University Inn. We had a side room with a football on the door...don't remember the number. Anyway, we were there 2 nights for orientation at Chapel Hill...like everyone else that weekend. We will definitely stay there again when in town. We didn't use the spa, so no comment below. I thought the staff was nice and helpful. Check out was quick and easy.

The towels and pillows were great. I really think I could have spent the whole day in that comfy bed. We had a king-size one!

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter.
