“Southern Elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

From gracious decor to comfortable beds to a friendly staff, The Carolina Inn, in the heart of Chapel Hill, NC is certainly THE place to stay for a taste of southern hospitality at its best. Top all that off with chocolate chip cookies upon arrival! It can't be beat!

Absolutely worth the stay. Service is above standard, restaurant top notch and rooms very comfortable with beautiful decor. On the college campus of UNC Chapel Hill NC and close to main street for variety of restaurants and shops. Landscaping all around hotel and campus is well kept. The staff is helpful with area info. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

Room Tip: Corner room has more room for over 2 people, two beds.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Carolina Inn.

Overall, I give it very high marks: stunning public spaces, extremely clean, fresh flowers, hard-working valets and a lovely bar and restaurant.

We ate one night at the Crossroads and it was a wonderful meal and excellent service. 2 breakfasts were also delicious with good service. Room service needs lots of improvement (and potentially supervisory improvement and protocol for how to deal with a guest's displeasure).

We were there for an event which kept us on the go from dawn until dusk. Our first morning we ordered one coffee and one toast (asked for it to be buttered while hot). Simple order for any hotel of any 3* plus level, and certainly a no-brainer for a property of this type. Very weak coffee arrived (looked like weak tea) and dry toast not buttered and no butter on tray. Once we noticed, I called down and was told some butter would be sent up. 40 minutes later, nothing. I called and was issued a weak apology and an inquiry if we wanted to have some sent up. That ship had sailed.

I left a message for the concierge asking that this breakfast be taken off our bill (not looking for a bar tab or a big meal to be comped. But being in a customer biz ourselves, we shouldn't pay for this mistake). When we showed up at checkout (days later) it was still on the bill and the desk person said that the kitchen manager would need to OK the change...Guys, this is a simple, "Our apologies. Of course I'll correct that." It was the principal not the $. I'm going into deep detail over a small thing because it should have been handled seamlessly. What if it was a special room service dinner with wine and there was a problem? If toast is an issue in the arrival and the correcting, I can't imagine they have a protocol for a really big item that should be comped by the hotel due to poor service/execution.

OK, ending on a high note: there is a coffee bar set up outside the bar in the mornings (no mention of this when we checked in). I found it and availed myself of the strong and plentiful coffee the rest of our stay. There is also a complimentary shuttle that we did not use, but others in our group did, and they reported how excellent that perk was.

I won't hesitate to recommend the Inn, but I hope the Inn does not hesitate to really examine how room service is handled/overseen. Other reviews have noted problems as well.

Dear BC Parent:
I'm very sorry to learn that we missed the attention to detail that you noted and then furthermore missed the opportunity to correct it sooner in the process. Please accept my apology. I'm not clear if the charges were taken off your bill, but if they were not please don't hesitate to reach out to me personally. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and for being so kind in your continued recommendation in spite of the service challenge you encountered.

Loved the music on the lawn on Friday evening. The staff, our room, the historic Inn and Chapel Hill were all fantastic. The bar is a great low-key place to hang out as well. There's history in every corner of the Inn.

This hotel could not be nicer. The room was spacious, beautifully furnished. Lots of history on the walls. The location is ideal for walking around campus and going to restaurants.
Wish we could have stayed longer!

Stayed here for one night in June while my boyfriend toured me through his favorite place (Chapel Hill). The hotel was beautiful, the staff was wonderful, and I didn't want to leave. Everyone was welcoming when we arrived, taking care of us the second we pulled up to the front entrance. The hotel is beautifully decorated, with places to sit and relax throughout. We were looking forward to attending Fridays on the Front Porch but after walking around Chapel Hill all day, we were exhausted and unfortunately there were no seats left. It looks as though this is a very popular locals event so everyone arrived early and staked out the chairs. The only recommendation I would make for the hotel is to provide blankets or camping chairs for guests to borrow. Since we were visiting from NYC, we obviously didn't have access to anything like that. So we ended up at a local bar, enjoying a drink before dinner, instead of staying at Fridays on the Front Porch.
The last thing I should mention is that the beds are incredibly comfortable. We were upgraded to a king and I can say that I didn't want to get out of bed the next morning!
Thank you for such a wonderful stay in a beautiful and historic hotel. We enjoyed stopping to read all of the stories and pictures posted throughout the hotel and learn a bit more about the hotel's history.
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Chapell Hill
