“I don't understand the hype”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

This is a decent restaurant but not great. The decor is sterile. All white with a few Japanese lanterns and a couple of white modern paintings with black stripes. It really was a dismal and cramped space.

Service was excellent. They waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about both food and wine, and the other staff unobtrusive but attentive.

The pork dumplings were average but the dipping sauce, because of the fresh cilantro, made it better than Chinese restaurants. The crab cake appetizer (a special) was better than average. For main entrees, the steamed black cod was very light; too light actually. I needed dessert afterwards. The steak filet special was good because of the bone marrow and other small accompaniments. The pork chop was well-prepared and enjoyed. The persimmon dessert was reminiscent of Thanksgiving with its spicing. The hot chocolate cake with coconut ice cream was decadent and delicious.

However, it came at a high price and we didn't leave thinking this was an exceptional dinner. Good, but quite expensive. We don't plan to return.

“Excellent and Unusual Food Preparation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

This is my favorite Chapel Hill restaurant ; actually one of my favorite USA restaurants! The only downside is it is expensive. The food is always delicious and uniquely prepared. The wine list is excellent and they make their suggestions as to pairings but the staff is not overbearing.
A great place to go anytime!

“My local favorite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Lantern Restaurant in Chapel Hill is unique, in that it is Asian, but not limited to any particular country or cusine. The owner-chef, Andrea Reusling, has won many prestigious awards and written a cookbook. The restaurant is small and rather simple in its decor, but there is nothing simple about the food. Local ingredients are featured and though some things are rather standard on the menu, there are also specials and seasonal features. A real treat!

“Can't Miss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Innovative and delicious. Arguably the best restaurant in Chapel Hill (get reservations to be sure you get a table) and one you'll remember for a long time. Minimalist elegance in decoration, excellent service and always creative menu. I love the tea and spice smoked chicken. And get the panna cotta if they have it for desert.

The best restuarant in the entire state and maybe southeast US- intimate setting, great service and some of the best food eaten- great wine list
