From build-your-own burger to specialty creations that put a twist on the standards, this restaurant is not only good food, but a good value, too. A single patty is 6 oz, which is gracious plenty for most of us...but in case your appetite is more demanding, you can order that as a double stack (2 patties) or a triple stack (3 patties). These patties even come in different varieties: beef, turkey or veggie burger. You can order fries to go with your burger creation -- regular, sweet potato, or half of each. The owner told us a small order was enough for two people, but we ordered the large anyway...and the three of us only managed to eat half of what was in the basket. This was partly due to the volume of fries, but as I said before, the burgers aren't exactly dainty! Each of us tried something different, from a Cajun burger with Italian sausage in the chili (and custo, ized with some additional toppings) to a BLT with avocado and pesto mayonnaise. Even the buns here at Buns are better than average...not just your standard off-the-grocery-store-shelf piece of bread. My husband had read up on this place before our visit and said they get the buns from a baker in Pittsboro, apparently. The toppings range from the standard lettuce, tomato, ketchup, american cheese, etc., to the slightly more exotic: brie; gruyere; pesto, chipotle or wasabi mayonnaise; avocado; carmelized onions; fried egg. Most are available for no extra charge, but some (a couple of the cheeses, fried egg, avocado, etc.) will add $1 to the price of your creation. If you aren't up for a burger, they offer a hot dog, BLT, grilled salmon sandwich and a grilled chicken sandwich, as well as a caesar salad. there are several dipping sauces available for your fries, or you can add chili and/or cheese to them.
The owner was the one to take our order and was happy to explain the options and make suggestions since we were obviously first-timers. he continued to circulate through the dining area as more customers arrived, delivering food to the tables, checking to be sure everyone was happy with their order and even busing tables himself. My son was pleased that there were two TVs in the dining area and that one of them was tuned to sports coverage...his favorite way to eat! (The other TV was tuned to news coverage.) And a bonus point unrelated to the food offerings, but important nonetheless, is that the bathrooms were clean.
You will pay more than at some fast food burger joints, though not a great deal more than combo meal prices at some, but the amount and quality of the food you receive in exchange for your dollars will not disappoint. Our son has been disappointed ever since the closing of Franklin St. Pizza & Pasta last year (a tradition since my days as a student on campus), but after eating at Buns yesterday, he decided he has found his new favorite. We definitely will be back!
