“Fun, friendly and fine hotel near UNC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

My wife and I were in town for a wedding in Oct 2011 for our first trip to Chapel Hill/Durham. Chose the Aloft to stay on SPG points because it was newer, and we really enjoyed the hotel for our 2-night stay.

Well-designed large rooms with a comfortable bed, good HDTV with HD channels; large bathroom; only having a shower was a slight disappointment, but it had good water pressure.

Cool lobby area with a bar, pool tables and a nice breakfast area with some good, inexpensive options (although one morning we took a short drive to Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen for the best breakfast biscuit sandwiches ever!)

The workout area was large and well-appointed, and the saltwater pool looked cool but we did not get to use it.

The valet parking worked well for us, and all of the staff at the front desk and valet could not have been nicer and more friendly. A short drive to UNC and also pretty close to Durham/Duke. Would definitely stay here again next time we are in the area.

My stay was short - I arrived at 1am and checked out at 8am - but Aloft made it easy for me. While the drive from the airport into Chapel Hill is very dark, the hotel is a direct route and easy to spot for an out-of-towner. Valet parking is included. The rooms were clean with plenty of space. Grabbing a coffee and breakfast sandwich had me on my way to work in the morning.

I would stay again the next time I am in Chapel Hill - and found it an easy commute to the UNC campus, too.

My husband and I chose ALOFT for a 2 night stay based on its proximity to the UNC hospital where our daughter-in -law was having a baby - our first grand child. We were very pleasantly surprised with the accommodations and extremely helpful and friendly service, all at a very reasonable price. The public areas and guest rooms are contemporary and a bit industrial looking - in a good way- clean lines & bright colors. The room reminded us a bit of hotels in Europe. Bright with minimal decor and clever use of space.
The best thing about this hotel was the staff. We were in and out until the wee hours the first night while waiting for the baby to be born and the staff was very accommodating and supportive helping us with a pizza delivery and plenty of coffee :) We will definitely stay there again.

We have been staying at aloft since they first opened and this has been our best experience. It was clean and comfortable, with a reasonably priced hot breakfast. They had an ice machine on our floor, which many aloft no longer offer. The staff was friendly and helpful. Pillows on our queen bed were queen size, not the puny ones that same a lofts have.

The place is nice, with a good use of space, but it felt like they were trying to hard to achieve being cool. Maybe we are just not the target audience. Our room was clean, and the design was certainly unique. Great shower. In room coffee was really great. Also, the in room connector for the laptop to TV was really awesome.

Things that surprised me:

Plastic Cups? Really? for over $100 a night I would prefer a real glass.
Communal Pumps for soap and shampoo in the shower. I guess we will all share?
Window controls are almost impossible to use, and the curtains block out all light so you are either flashing the world, or in total darkness. Needs a privacy curtain that allows natural light in the room.

I loved this hotel and everything about it. From check-in the staff were wonderful and extremely accommodating. We had a group in town for a meeting at the Friday Center at UNC, and the Hotel staff was able to assist us with complementary shuttles to and from the facility, as well as a shuttle to and from the restaurant we choose for a post-meeting dinner.

The hotel itself has a very modern and trendy feel to it with its furniture and layout. That said, it definitely does not sacrifice comfort for style. The lobby featured a free pool table, which was an excellent addition and one that I'd recommend more hotels make use of. The bar was pretty nice as well, with a bunch of TVs for sports, good seating areas, and good beer on tap including a few local micro brews. The pool was small, but good temperature and clean. And the fitness facility was small, but the machines and equipment were very nice and in good shape.

The rooms were great, and also in the same modern/trendy style. The beds were extremely comfortable, the TV was an HD flat screen, and the internet in the rooms was pretty fast. The room also features refrigerators and complimentary bottles of water. Most importantly everything was very clean.

The hotel is also in a good spot in terms of location. It is approximately 2 miles from UNC's main campus, and not far from most of the other things in Chapel Hill. Everything is very easily accessible by car. The hotel is also within walking distance from a couple of shopping centers with some decent restaurants. Given how spread out Chapel Hill is, however, I'd definitely recommend renting a car if you are flying in.

Overall this was one of the best hotels I've stayed in for a long time, maybe even one of my favorite ever. I plan on staying here next time I am in town and recommend it for anyone visiting the area.
