“What a Treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

I am a sales rep for McGraw-Hill and travel 7 states, this was recommended to me by another rep since I wanted to visit the Student book store so I could take inventory and see the buyers . What a wonderful place, everyone bent over backward to make me feel at home. The dinner I had at the restaurant was excellent and the Pistachio Creme Brule was outstanding the great service. Fell in love with the Pesto Hummas and were happy to give me a copy of the receipie. The bartender introduced me to a wonderful new vodka that is distilled there in Chapell Hill, it is called TOPO, very smooth with a different finish. The rooms were spacious and the bed was so comfortable and had a great night sleep. Parking is always a problem visiting the bookstore so they were more than happy to take me there and I called them 4 hours later to pick me up, what a treat not to have to lug my samples and try to find a parking space which is a premium at that school.

Rooms are spacious and well appointed. Bathrooms are also very nice. Great value - room rate was less than $150. On site restaurant was excellent. Order the beef. Marinade is tasty, and meat was perfectly prepared.

Since I travel quite frequently I tend to pick the chain hotels because it's easy to know what to expect. In this case, somebody else picked the hotel for us and we were pleasantly surprised. The lobby is not very big but has a fireplace, comfy seating, a great bar. The decoration is european, with gilded mirrors and heavy furniture that gives a luxurious touch. The rooms are very comfortable, we had a corner room with windows overlooking the garden, nice draperies, modern bathroom, no tub but marble shower. Every room has a Keurig coffee machine. You get a nice robe, good quality toiletries as well as chocolates every night.
Buffet breaksfast is excellent, with a variety of pastries, fruit, yogurt, french toast, eggs, etc.
I wouldn't think twice about coming back !

Thank you for choosing The Siena Hotel for your most recent visit to Chapel Hill. We were glad to hear that you enjoyed the amenities of the hotel including our breakfast in Il Palio. For your future stay I wanted to make you aware that we do have a few rooms that have bathtubs if that is your preference. Thank you again for your review and we hope to see you next time!

Sincerely,

This hotel knows hospitality. I've been staying here for almost 25 years and they have been remodeling this hotel but keeping its charm at same time. What makes this hotel great really is the staff. I know people say this but it's more than an expression at this hotel. There were lots of newer faces possibly a result of new ownership over the last 3 years. The old staff is GREAT and hopefully will train the new to same standards.

Only issue I have is the complexity of breakfast being included. They have a selected menu of some 5 items weekdays but if you order something else instead they just don't have a $10 credit towards anything on menu. For example I wanted an egg white omelette no cheese/no potato for dietary concerns but since it was NOT identical to the 5 items it was at my expense. Of course they ended up waiving but it was odd to even have to ask. Additionally, on weekends they have a buffet for the house guests. But they give you the same menu with the 5 items. When ordering those they inform that those are not available on the weekend because they have the buffet. Then on cooler days, they don't have plate warmers and there is something morally wrong in the food world about hot eggs on cold plates. If you cannot do it right...don't do it.

Still great hotel

Thank you for taking time to speak with me about your recent stay, and thank for your loyalty over the past 25 years. Your kind words mean the world to our associates. They are very passionate people who truly love taking care of others.

After our conversation I met with our breakfast team and we have improved our process when guests request special dietary items. The new process is seamless and allows our guests to modify their options to meet their dietary needs without any interruption.

Thank you again for the kind words and suggestions. We look forward to serving you on your next visit to Chapel Hill, NC.

Sincerely,

We stayed at the Siena Hotel after a long, stressful day, and it could not have been better. The room was very large, quiet (we asked for a room not facing the street) and well appointed. The bathroom was very new and modern. The hotel is very close to the University and the UNC hospitals. We didn't feel like going out, so chose to eat at the hotel restaurant. The service was very good and the food was exceptional. Two of us chose different appetizers and entrees, and everything we ordered was delicious, interesting and fit for a foodie.
It was a really lovely experience - we wanted to take the hotel with us when we left for home.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face the street, if you want quiet.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experiences with us here at The Siena and Il Palio Ristorante. We are thrilled to hear your stay could not have been better. In addition to being close to UNC and the hospital we also provide a complimentary shuttle throughout Chapel Hill. Making it even easier for our guests to get around town, and not have to worry about parking.

Great choice eating in Il Palio! The culinary team prides itself on using local sustainable ingredients whenever possible, which Chef Adam Rose gives a lot of credit to for the great quality and taste of his food.

We look forward to serving you again soon!

Stayed one night at this well appointed property, plush furnishings and nice amenities. The linens on the beds were very soft and the mattresses insured an excellent night's sleep. The room was large, and the marble-look tile work in the oversized shower was really nice. I appreciated the K cup coffee in room as well. The housekeeping staff is very noisy and maybe since it's an older facility, the walls aren't as soundproof as newer hotels? We could hear the guests in the next room and vacuum cleaners buzzed at 530pm at check in, again at 8am the next morning and at 10 am, so much so that the tv had to be turned up to hear over the vacuum cleaner motors. Additionally there was continuous door slamming all morning...not sure if it was staff or guests. The stay was supposed to include free breakfast in the restaurant and this was the only problem we had, the server didn't seem very pleased to see us and did not point out the red box on the menu for the hotel guests eating free. We noticed it ourselves, and only ordered from the free selections. My husband didn't receive the complete meal he picked, and on mine the sausage discs were awful, you had to use a knife to cut through them. However, the whole grain pancakes I ordered were spectacular! I would love to get that recipe, to see how they made them so light! The surprise came when we were presented with the bill for food that was supposed to be free. We assumed it was so that we could calculate the correct tip so we used that total, (sadly, we usually tip the whole cost of a meal if we have coupons or get something free, so this time the server lost out). After drawing a line through the food line items and writing "complimentary" on the ticket ourselves we left a cash tip based on that total. Being presented with a bill with "amount due" on it isn't too cool, and I could see folks easily intimidated actually paying for the free food. Other servers were pointing out the complimentary selections to other guests. Nice place but I'm not sure I'd go back...

Thank you for your recent stay here at The Siena Hotel, and thank you for taking the time to review your experience. We are pleased to hear we exceeded your expectations with the comfort of our bed and our amenities.

We are very sorry for the noise and the mix up at breakfast, this should have never happened. Our hotel associates love taking care of our guests and when we fail, we take it very seriously. We work hard everyday to make sure our guests enjoy their stay and when we don’t deliver a perfect stay we immediately work on not repeating the same mistake twice.

I have met with our team on ways we can work quieter. The housekeepers are going to make sure they quietly shut the doors when they enter and exit the guestrooms. Our maintenance team is installing thicker door silencers on all guestroom doors to muffle the door noise. Again we are sorry we disturbed your stay.

Additionally I have met with all of our breakfast associates and discussed ways to improve our communication of our daily complimentary selections. They were very saddened to hear they did not create a feeling of welcome when serving you. Our team truly has servant hearts and they take great pride in delivering heartfelt service.

I appreciate the time you spent with me discussing your stay in greater detail, and we look forward to serving you the next time you are in the Chapel Hill area.

Sincerely,

Anthony Carey

We stayed at The Siena during a homegame weekend and although they were busy we had a great stay.
Rooms: The rooms are large, modern, clean and very comfortable. We had 2 double beds and the room was large and comfortable. In addition to the beds there were 2 large sofa chairs and a desk with a chair. The room was very clean and the beds comfortable. The bathroom was clean and quite large. We were happy with the room.
Service: The service everywhere was very good. The staff aim to make you happy and are attentive. We give the service in all sections, front desk, valet, bar and room service were excellent.
Food: Breakfast was included every morning. The food was quite good but very repetitive. The breakfast was standard, eggs, pancakes/french toast, potatoes, bacon & sausage, a small selection of breads and pastries, yogurt and fruit. Sufficient, fresh and good quality. The bar food was excellent, upscale and very tasty. We loved hanging out and having drinks and watching the games at the bar.
Ambiance: very classy. The hotel is impressive from the outside and from the inside. On the weekends they have jazz playing at the bar which adds a nice touch.
Overall, a very nice hotel and we loved staying here. We will be back.
