For the past few years, we have really, really cheaped out on our beach hotels (by choice), but I've always regretted it afterward. I got tired of 1960s-era hotels with rusty pipes and water that stank so bad you couldn't even shower in it or brush your teeth with it. :-/ Most of those motels, while clean and perfectly fine otherwise, have this water/pipe problem. So my husband treated me to a stay at the Best Western in Swansboro for an overnight stay near Emerald Isle. And what a treat it was compared with our past accommodations! Front desk staff was VERY pleasant and informative. Free coffee / tea / cocoa in the lobby 24 hrs. a day. Fantastic deluxe continental breakfast [cereal, pastries, yogurt, fruit and a belgian waffle station!] included with your stay. Hotel staff cleaned and restocked the dining area continuously, which was so lovely compared with some other places we have stayed. The room was clean and there were 5 fluffy pillows on each bed, bathroom was clean, fridge was huge and everything worked great. if only this hotel were right on the beach, it would be PERFECT! Still, that is a drawback -- it's a good 15-minute ride from the central part of Emerald Isle (double that or longer in high season, like July). It also wasn't cheap at $125/nt + tax, and that's in September. We did have an issue with some beastly people on the floor above us rumbling, tumbling and stomping all over their room from 3:00 - 4:00 am. Woke me and my husband up. Didn't call front desk because I doubted there was hotel security and figured if they got fussed at, they'd probably just do it more (grrr). All in all, I would call this a very solid choice for a clean and modern (relative to most EI beach hotels) place to stay that's worth the short drive to the ocean. :-)
