“Perfect for a laid-back beach retreat”

My husband and I stayed in Lighthouse Cottage this past Labor Day weekend and loved it! We were able to rent it nightly by renting last-minute (the week of arrival), but once we arrived we wished we could have stayed a whole week.

THE HOUSE - The house is exactly as pictured in all the photos except for one weird quirk: the "3rd bedroom" with the two twin beds is actually in the garage! In order to access it from the house, you must descend the outdoor deck stairs and enter the garage - strange! No mention of this in the description or by the rental staff on the phone. My husband suggested that this would be considered really cool by some teens or tweens of a family, to have a whole level to themselves, but we were thankful we didn't arrive with two other couples and have to argue over who had to sleep in the garage! Haha...

The house is located directly on the beach, with its own boardwalk to the sand. You can just see the water (over the dunes) from the deck or kitchen/living area - beautiful! The furniture is updated and nice looking. All hardwood flooring makes sandy/wet floor cleanup a breeze (we found a broom and a mini vacuum in the guest closet). We didn't use the oven, but the stovetop, microwave, dishwasher and fridge all worked great. Plenty of pots and utensils for cooking (not many baking pans). We wished a FEW basics were stocked, such as salt, pepper and sugar, but the rental company warned us in advance to bring these items. The shower was tall enough for my husband (6 feet) - yay! - and had great water pressure, although it did not drain very well. We rented linens from the rental company and they were fine.

The screened in porch was nice to have, but the floors are warped and peeling (one screen door can't even open all the way because the floor bumps up so high) and need to be redone. The open deck area and higher seating area on the boardwalk were lovely. We really liked having the hot/cold outdoor shower and hose - big plus!

THE BEACH - Since Caswell beach is residential and has only one street of houses, the beach was not crowded at all even though we were there for Labor Day. The beach is wide with plenty of dry sand even at high tide. The sand is nice and soft and doesn't scrape your feet up. Only a few houses down to the lighthouse, which is the darkest (black and gray), most austere lighthouse I have ever seen but was fun to watch since it's still in use. All up and down the beach we found turtle nests with protective caging around them - and the previous renters wrote in the guest book that they had watched baby turtles hatch on the beach right behind the house! We weren't so lucky, but the nests were fun to see.

Our favorite part about this location/beach is the entire eastern end of the island which is owned by the Baptist Assembly and does not allow swimming. Because of the no-swimming rule, this part of the beach remains almost untouched (I guess no one cares to go down there if you can't swim) and it's a great area to take your dogs off-leash and let them run through the surf, or just walk without seeing another soul (the dunes are tall enough that you can't see the Baptist Assembly buildings either). The area is about a 5-10 min walk down the beach from Lighthouse Cottage, depending on how fast you are.

THE AREA - Extremely convenient - just a 5 minute drive from a gas station and the Oak Island Rentals office where you pick up your keys, and only a few minutes more to two grocery stores, convenience stores, a Lowes, etc. Southport is only about 10-15 minutes away and has plenty of other stores and a few restaurants. The downtown area of Oak Island is 5-10 minutes away and has most of the recommended restaurants along with plenty of tourist traps and random other places (car repair, banks, etc) on the main stretch. It was NOT impressive - looked mostly run down and uninviting, but I guess they just call that "beachy" to get away with not updating anything. We dined at Bob's Dogs (hot dog hole-in-the-wall, yummy and cheap), the Flying Fish Cafe at Oak Island Pier (mid range prices with a range of unexpected delicious food choices and a fabulous oceanfront view) and Island Way (at the other pier, expensive/overpriced but good food with another oceanfront view).

THE BOTTOM LINE: We loved this rental and are already planning our next trip back!
