“Needs some updating, but not a bad stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

We stayed at the Best Western Plus in Cary while visiting NC State University in Raleigh. Located near the traffic-heavy Cary shopping district (Cary Crossroads), it's easy to miss the turn-in to the hotel if you're not careful. Once off Walnut Street, you'll drive past an abandoned (?) building on the left. Keep driving, and you'll see the hotel at the bottom of the hill.

Pluses: the unit we've stayed in had a kitchenette, including a refrigerator, stove top and microwave. The breakfast was definitely continental, with packaged biscuits for microwave heating. Food was ample, but nothing really special. Beds were comfortable. Wifi worked.

Minuses: It's old, and doesn't appear to have had much attention (at least in the suites building) on remodeling recently. The parking at the lower building is partially covered, but since it was a walk down the hill from the main reception building, it felt a little creepy. Not bad, just different than other hotels.

At least one night a week, the staff served free pizza, arriving hot and fresh via delivery. They offered wine, but we did not see any water. When we asked about water, we did receive cups and cold bottled water.

There's also a cool Checkers board table in the lobby, as well as several PCs from which you can print.

Overall, it's an average hotel,at a low price, in a good Cary location.

Extended stay room...Clean and quiet..Close enough to All activites. Ice machine was slow and noisy but it was a 100 degree day.

I am wondering where the rest of you reviewers are staying??!! This was a terribly old, dark, depressing hotel.. and for $99/night.. give me a break! I am currently staying here for work and there was no other rooms available in the area or we would have all left! The beds are older than I am, and I am 40 years old. You can feel the springs in your back. The hallways are painted brown which makes the hallway, dark and depressing, the pool is dirty, the gym has a washer and dryer in it with no mirrors or tv. The rooms are small and average. We were told that there were going to be fridges, and microwaves.. nope. The ooooonly thing that I can say positively is that the shower water pressure is strong. The pictures that they have posted.. are far more generous that in person.
What is "Plus" about this property??

This hotel is an older hotel. The room was enormous, but the bed was quite firm. They gave us 4 pillows, but they were the size of a sofa throw pillow. The room was clean, however, and the shower was hot. For the price, less than $65 this was not a bad hotel.

The guy working the desk at 9pm didn't speak English very well and he worked so slow getting us checked in. I could have ordered in a pizza and eaten it in the length of time it took for him to get us checked in. When we finally made it to our room, I couldn't get the door to open because, unbeknownst to me, you had to raise the door handle as opposed to pull down on it. A very backwards door handle.

The breakfast was the best part of this hotel. Surprisingly, they had waffles and oatmeal to go along with the cereal, pastries, and bagels. If this was the cheapest place for us to stay, I'd stay here again, but it would not be the first place for me to look up.

Stayed at this BW in Cary NC for 5 days or more 2-3 times in 2011, and recently stayed for 11 days in March 2012. Since 2011 the complimetary breakfast has been significtantly improved...scrambled eggs, bacon, link sausage, oatmeal along with fruit and pastry. In 2011 breakfast was minimal. I have stayed in Business King and a 2-Bed Room. The beds are very comfortable, with updated bed covering and pillows. The rooms are very clean as is the hotel lobby. The times I have been at this BW, it appears nearly full.

The desk check-in clerks I encountered...Fred & Avon...were efficient, and very polite and customer friendly. Brenda Jones, Asst Sales/Mgr was most helpful in 2011 and 2012 in getting me a room on short notice and a rate that is covered by my perdiem.

Room Tip: My experience with King and 2 Beds are equal...very good.

My husband and I stayed at this BestWestern in Cary in late March 2012. The suite was very clean! We had a king size bed with a kitchen that had a real set of dishes, toaster, coffee pot with packets of coffee, mounted microwave oven and medium size refrigerator. The suite also included a sofa sleeper. The staff was kind and always helpful. We did not know how to turn the heat on and called the front desk. A maintenance man was at our door about two minutes later and showed us how to turn on the heat. The free internet access was great! We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this hotel! We stayed four nights.

I'm being slightly generous with the extra star, but whatever. It's about as average as it gets.

The entrance can be a bit confusing as the hotel is stashed a little ways back beyond the driveway. If you overshoot it thinking you can take the next driveway, it gets more confusing because they've chain-linked off a secondary entrance. A little ingenuity will get you through.

The fellow at the front desk was grouchy to the two people he checked in before us. He was semi-nice to us but his grumpy side was only a mere stupid question away from cutting us short. I guess it was just his personality.

We requested one of the renovated rooms. According to him, "renovated" only meant that smoke-tainted carpets were removed and replaced and some spaces were converted to handicapped access rooms. He offered us one of the latter and it was mostly acceptable. Aside from the horrendously loud air conditioner, this room was fine.

The shower was not a walk-in like you'd find in most handicapped access rooms. There was a regular tub, but the toilet had rails on the walls. This tub was great for us because we're not bound to wheelchairs.

Some Marriot or Hilton amenities that spoil us were nowhere to be found, i.e. a room safe and card keys that don't lose juice when kept too close to wallet credit cards. But the worse blight was the workout room. We take our hotel exercises very seriously and this Best Western doesn't seem to. There were two or three fragile machines in a claustrophobic little room with no television. It's an embarrassment and I should take off another star because of it.

The computer out front gets the job done at a very slow pace.

Breakfast ends at 10am and it's a full spread of barely edible eggs, meats and starches. The sausages, however, were surprisingly good and the DIY waffles were pretty darn fantastic. The coffee and juices were alright. This really is an average hotel. We're in no hurry to return unless Priceline tells us we have to.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room.
