I've made the rounds to the various Irish pubs in Cary, over to Brier Creek, and downtown Raleigh. I just haven't found a good Irish restaurant. Yep, most do the beer part really well. But take Mahoney's... three of us did. This is my take on the restaurant side.
Pretzel with mustard appetizer... hot and nicely salted but one corner almost compressed into an unchewable bite... I'm sure thanks to the microwave.
Hot Brown... listen... don't offer a mornay sauce unless you know how to season it and what consistency it shoud be. It looked (and tasted) look they took it out of the back of the fridge, blobbed it on the turkey on toast, then microwaved it. Consider taking this off the menu. (I'm from Louisville... I know hot browns. This ain't it y'all.)
Sheppards Pie... I didn't taste it. But, one of the others noted that it had corn in it. Huh?
Corn beef... nice sized serving, but dry and a bit tasteless. Tater tots instead of boiled potatoes? Well, I guess this is okay, but a boiled potatoe with the cabbage is more to my liking.
The prices are good. The atmosphere is nice and has a relaxed feel. Clean. And, service was good. I might try this place again. Maybe the chef was off that night. I'd like to to be good. The menu has great sounding items. It may just be an execution issue.
LOGISTICS: It's at a high-traffic intersection of Cary Pkwy and Tryon Rd in reach of Crossroad shoppers. Sits high on the corner with a shopping area behind it. ABC Liquor store in the complex. It's a little squirrelyy getting into it at night. As you'll likely approach it fro the back side.
