We traveled from New England to do some mining in NC. We arrived early and spent the entire day there digging bucket after bucket from the tailing pile that they take down from the mine. You can tell that it has been processed but they do leave smaller ones to be found and if your lucky some larger ones.We found a lot of blue sapphires but not sure yet if they are of gem quality or if they are worth anything. I plan on having the good ones cleaned up and appraised. The people there are nice and even offered some juice for our younger one.
After digging a million buckets I learned what I should be looking for when digging material to go through. I dug down under the top layer and at the back of the pile. Look at all big pieces because you never know:-).
It was fun but It would be nice to see the mine from the dig your own area and get to go through material that hasn't been gone through already. I would LOVE to find a very large blue or grey sapphire.
This mine was on the show Hillbilly Blood! Thought that was cool:-)
I will go back again. Just hope they make a new dig your own area closer to the mine. Masons Mine is another cool mine to look for purple sapphires. Supposedly not salted as well.
