“Nice Pool and right on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

The motel was nice, the pool was great. Seemed there were ALOT of people there with very small children. We were on the 2nd. FL. We were on the sound side. The ocean views were all booked. We went about an hour away to get to a major restaurant Such as Capt. Georges etc.) There are some restaurants close to the hotel as well though.

We are in the Motel Suite on the bottom, Unit 308. Very clean, nice view of ocean. The pool is nice and the staff is friendly. There seems to be a large number of families with children at this Motel. The children run up and down the stairs, back and forth in the unit above us and screaming everywhere. We have had children and are not completely intolerable of kids and noise but, if you don't like a lot of children then this may not be a place you like. The back deck is three stories high and being on the bottom the sand rains down any time someone walks above you so, you really can't just sit out there and enjoy it.

Overall, a good value and comfortable with great views but not real quiet.

Room Tip: Upper level cost more and no one is running over your head. The bottom floor is much cheaper but yo...

i would like to first off say that all of the negatives surrounding our trip were completly out of the control of the staff of the lighthouse view. this was our first trip to the obx. we were in a third story king oceanfront. wich was nice and the view great. walking distance to beach super short. staff was friendly. as far as the reviews in wich people claimed the sand was full of cigarettes and that the smoking was a big problem for them...I belive that these are simply the kind of people who must find something to complain about because I am a non smoker, and found the butts to be very minimal. the grounds were very clean. smoking is also outside so i cant imagine why they are bothered so badly by this. however, and again this is out of the control of lhv and really more of a general complaint about obx.. the ocean side in front of the hotel is dangerous very little sand and big waves. there was a powerful rip current the entire trip making the ocean in front of the hotel just a view for us. so we thought we would find a beach with more sand area for our toddler to run around safely...here in lies the BIG problem with obx. almost ALLL of the desirable beach area...and i mean more beach area than not, is not only closed for orv making the permit they try to get you to buy absolutley useles, but is in most areas blocked off entirely, even to walk on...if you even want to walk the very very long walk.. due to the nesting piping plover....the sound side is nice for small children.. and my little one had fun there but again the small areas not closed off for the plover were crouded. so hotel gets a very good review. my review on the obx..this place is for the birds..LITERALLY.

Room Tip: there is no elevator so depending on your health you may want to chose a lower floor...however even...

Photos on website are accurate. Dated but clean, in a somewhat depressed area. Don't expect to find a Starbucks on the corner. Staff was nice, but a few things fall short of expectation: housekeeping is an extra charge; no coin machine in laundry area which has restricted hours; linens/towels have to be exchanged by the guest; pots and pans in kitchen but no foil or coffee filters - you have to pretty much buy or bring anything; at our time of booking the pool was shown in a different location other then in the parking lot; and "in the shadow of the lighthouse" is a little generous a description (check website photos and google map it, it's not that close.). Good location for beach going, fishing, and on the way to Ocracoke ferry. Other than that we would stay someplace other than Buxton because it is pretty isolated and has hardly any good food, a cup of coffee, etc. Another major note : be prepared to use stairs. Lots of stairs. Not good for people with bad knees or those that pack like Diana Ross. Best thing LHV has to offer is beach and ocean, but its the OBX and you can get that at any lodging.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the Buxton area and our facilities. Buxton is certainly a peaceful location. This is part of the lure of the island for many visitors that continue to return each year. There are no chain restaurants or stores. Unfortunately during one of our last storms the pool was washed away and thus we rebuilt in a new location. We hope that all of our visitors enjoy the new facilities! Housekeeping services are offered to all rooms- suites and cottages are upon request. We strive to continue with updates to our rooms and cottages annually.

We have stayed at LHV many times over the years and this last stay was the final time for us. Dirty and dated interior of the rooms, rude staff, unkempt grounds and no enforcement of basic rules (no glass at the pool, smoking etc) has made it hard for us to continue to look forward to visiting there. The views of the ocean are stunning no doubt, but there are plenty of other options for the money. We understand that things will not be perfect, but clearly the rooms are not cleaned very well and things like sometimes you have two deck chairs on your porch...sometimes none and filthy windows! It is almost as if they are just not putting money in to the place because of the imminent reality that one day the units will be taken by a storm like the pool. And yes, there is a new pool that overlooks the parking lot and the only reason its there is because nobody would stay at all without one. It was almost as if they were resentful on the subject of the pool when booking months ago asking about the pool we could not get a straight answer, it took us looking at satellite photos to determine the condition of the area! Up to us discovering the truth they kept telling us everything was the same!!! Keeping the truth hidden is the same as a lie to me, but not to them. Customer service is NOT their specialty. If you are looking for warm southern hospitality, you will not find it here. Nasty notes on the fridge warning you of fines for leaving garbage in the unit, when its not even clean when you check in! This is a business on the ocean living out its last few years limping along taking what they can get. A shame. And yes, they will come on here and comment about how they are surprised and shocked at this and give some story about how we are wrong and ungrateful..but truth is glaring and you can see for yourself if you wish to throw your money away. Sad decline indeed. If they just cleaned, replaced carpets and acted like they were glad to see you it would make things just that much better. I work too hard all year to waste my money and be annoyed on a vacation. If you like campy, dirty, scuzzy camping style this is the place, but you will be paying UP FRONT prices that should get you a bit more. Staying in Buxton next year, just not at LHV>

Room Tip: Any other place in Buxton. Your car....

Not that others don't have a view, but I must admit that as a seacoast aficionado that the proximity was pretty special. Sounds, smells and the spectacular surf were wonderful in this village that is 32 miles in the ocean from the mainland.
The Lighthouse View ambience is about 2 steps up from campground. The necessity of the unique beachfront construction as well as the beating wood takes from the capricious OBX weather is understood, however rudeness is not unless possibly in the middle of a hurricane. No welcome or even a "good afternoon", just a curt demand for the balance, license plate number and a fast "no" to a possibility of either a lower beachfront room or assistance with luggage was our welcome. He was the only person we met during our stay on Hatteras that behaved in such an unfriendly manner. In fairness, the gentleman improved his attitude significantly the second time we spoke. I suspect the ladies also behind the desk might have had a chat with him, but that is speculation. After we explored a bit, I understand the demand for full payment up front. There were a number of sites that were significantly more appealing to us which, if available, might have been a temptation.
We had friends that booked the cheaper side facing Highway 12 and they were not happy with the noise and lack of any view. I would strongly suggest that if you want to stay, go for the ocean view (not sure of any actual Lighthouse view, but it might have overlooked the old location))and another suggestion that, unless you want additional exercise, would be to book on the second floor or more correctly, the first one above the pilings. Same view as the third but quicker to the beach and far less effort hauling stuff back upstairs to your room..
Room was just OK: very basic, worn out bedding, noisy air conditioner, as was the room servicing. Extremely rustic if that is your thing.
.

Room Tip: guaranteed an ocean view and not on the top floor.

We just returned from out trip to the OBX and we loved staying at the Lighthouse View. The pictures on the website are up to date and right on target. Everyone was friendly and we totally enjoyed our visit. I would recommend this place to anyone.
