“Simple, clean, can't beat the location!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

We stayed at the Cape Hatteras Motel twice (June16-21 & June30-July5), and enjoyed it immensely both times. The first stay was in a townhouse unit, the second in 2 rooms with 2 queen beds each. Both times we loved the location. Yes, the furnishings are simple and dated, but hey - they were clean and worked just fine! The beds in the queens room had new down comforters on them and were very comfy. Appreciated the flat screen TVs with cable - especially the Disney and Nick channels for the kiddos. WiFi was in-and-out, but was handy to have when it did work. The location cannot be beat! Since it's the last hotel in Buxton before an empty stretch of miles of highway/shore to Avon, you have some unbeatable views and it's very uncrowded. Also loved having the connivence of Avon Food Lion being 5 minutes away (especially when we stayed in the townhouse with a full kitchen). One of the best parts also was the Shipwreck Grill across the street. We ate there almost every day. But - back to the hotel. Very, very friendly and helpful staff as well. *Only* critique would be that there was no housekeeping service in the townhouse unit, meaning we had to walk our dirty towels across the street to the office every day when we wanted new ones. Not that big a deal, but would have been nice to have them delivered to our unit. In conclusion, the best thing I can say is that YES we recommend this to friends, and we'll be back next year for sure!

We spent 2 nights in a 2nd floor ocean view room and enjoyed our visit. You can't get much closer to the beach than an ocean room here! Room was clean, comfortable and spacious. Plenty of space to hang towels/swim suits up. Buxton is quieter than Nag's Head. You will need a car or take a long walk along a fairly busy road to a restaurant (there is a small breakfast place across the street but we thought it was only fair - nothing special). We liked the chairs on the balcony but the balconies are not private - they are on the deck area that is used like a 'hallway'. BUT there's not a lot of people traffic going by so it's pretty quiet and nearly private. Windows had screens so we could leave the windows open a bit to hear the surf at night. Bathrooms were well kept. We did not use the pool so can't report on that. The surf was rough so you'll need to keep an eye on kids. Really nice place to stay!

Room Tip: 2nd floor ocean view room. There are also 3rd floor ocean views but I imagine that may be a quite a...

The ocean-side townhouse and room rentals are perfect--literally right on the beach! Great views.
The pros:
-the kitchen is well equipped
-the rooms are clean
-furniture is well maintained
-management is friendly
-the swimming pool is small, but nice and clean
-overall great for families
-excellent value

The cons:
-no internet on the ocean side (or maybe for you it's a good thing!) although management if fine with you bringing your laptop to the office to use.
-the beach is beautiful, but if you have young children you need to keep an eye on them as the currents are quite strong.

Four years in a row we have been and still love it.

Room Tip: Rooms on the ocean side are good. I heard that the rooms across the road near the pool are not as n...

Awesome review. Thank you! You will also be happy to know we added new antennas today so our wi-fi signal should be sufficient to reach anywhere on the property, which is good news for those who need to be connected. Thanks again, Dave

Another fabulous stay at the Cape Hatteras Motel! We arrived late and they greeted me by name when we got there. Plenty of parking available! Unit was clean, stocked plenty of fresh towels and furnishing aren’t fancy but were very comfortable. Beds are very comfy, showers have great water pressure and having a full kitchen in the unit was such a plus for us with the kids. All the dishes and utensils you might need are already there. And if you stay here you MUST get an ocean front room! Open the door and the ocean is right there! The long open decks with rocking chairs encourage guests to get to one know another. And while there are no elevators, steps are wide and solid so easy to maneuver even for my husband who was on crutches! (Of course we had booked a third floor Oceanfront Suite before the broke this leg but he managed ok.) Also there are hoses and water spouts where you can clean off the sand on the stair landings. That came in handy after I buried the kids in the sand one afternoon. Another nice feature are clotheslines that run along the porch with clothespins. Perfect place to dry out wet towels and bathing suits.

Location is fantastic – quick drive to Hatteras Lighthouse, short drive to Avon fishing pier and close to many dining options including a restaurant next to the hotel office as well as a cute boutique to shop in. The motel also has a pool and hot tub if you get tired of the sand (as my kids did one afternoon.) If you do find only the sound side rooms are available – it’s an easy quick walk to the beach and you are in for a spectacular sunset from your back windows. And sound side parking area is larger so if you bring a boat there is room to park it.

My husband and his friend found this hotel on a surfing trip one winter and it has become our favorite place to stay on the outer banks ever since. Reasonable rates, big conveniences when traveling with kids and you can’t get any closer to the ocean than this motel. Will be back again soon.

Room Tip: Stay Oceanfront! 3rd floor is best views but now that dune is gone - 2nd floor is good too. Iif you...

We stayed at this hotel and the view of the ocean and beech were totally awesome. For the price you couldn't ask for a better value. The rooms were very clean - furnishings a little out dated but in very good condition.

We were absolutely amazed by the beauty of the view and the fact we could drop a rock from our rooms deck into the water @ high tide! Everyone was so very friendly, just the total mindset of the people on the island was totally different from most tourist type areas! They watch out for one another, for example, my daughter was getting married and we were leaving to run to the store when a gentleman on a bike flagged us down and ask if we were having a wedding which we said yes and he told us that we had someone broke down on the beach! It wasn't anyone with us so he continued going down the beach asking everyone if they were with them just to get them help that sums up how friendly they are there!!!Everyone needs to go here once in their life at least!!!

Room Tip: Oceanside is where you want to be, they are nice and the view is awe inspiring!!!!

I stayed hear for a night in late February and the weather was cool but sunny. Not much open on Hatteras this time of year but that also means there were few tourist.

I stayed on the oceanside and high tide came right up to the pylons of the building. You don't get any better ocean front then that! This place is in danger of disappearing into the Atlantic some check out before next hurricane season.

The rooms were large, clean, and comfortable. Microwave and fridge provided for the budget traveler. The very friendly hosts were helpful and obviously passionate about their business and the island.

Highly recommended!
