“Beautiful Landscapes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2011

The Smokey Moutains are one of our favorite destinations. The mountains are very scenic. During the summer, the green countryside can be viewed via the various parkways and backroads, hiking, or via train. The Great Smoky Moutain Railroad is a very nostalgic medium to relax, travel and view the moutain sites. Attached are a view pictures. Enjoy.

“Go....Just not for the scenery”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2011

We took the trip to Dillsboro on Saturday May 28th. The train is about a 75 minute ride each way. The scenery is full of broken down trailers, thrown away appliances, and trash. There is no scenery of the mountains. There is no good side of the train to sit. Dillsboro is a cute town to walk around, eat, browse, and shop. Bryson City has the same. The train ride itself is fun and the staff is nice. If you just want to have the experince of the train ride, go, you can say you have done it. It would be easier and save the time to drive to each town, look around, and go on to your next stop.

“Time consuming and disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2011

The trip should be half as long as it is. If you ride the train and then raft back, it might be fine. Just make sure you are on the scenic side (as you walk to the back of the train, sit on your right). You can see many of the views as you do other activities in the area.
I would not suggest this trip.

“Enjoyable train ride!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2011

My husband and I were really disheartened after reading some of these reviews, but we decided to go ahead with the trip anyway. We're so glad we did! We paid for the coach class car with the operable windows, but had much more fun standing in the car with the open windows. The scenery was pretty and we had a nice time at the NOC. (Try the pulled pork sandwich at Slow Joe's!!) The hour long stop over left ample time to walk around, take pics and have a quick bite to eat. The views of the lake were beautiful and we saw many houseboats on the water. We also saw some river rafters near the gorge.

The cons... the website mentions multiple bridges and a couple of tunnels. Perhaps the other route had them, but not the one we were on to the gorge. We were a little disappointed with this. There also wasn't much to do around Bryson City after the ride.

Overall we had a fun time and would definitely recommend it to others!

“Overpriced waste of time.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2011

We read this was a train ride through the beautiful Smoky Mountains and we would use our cameras often to take beautiful panoramic shots. Instead we spent three and half hours looking at trees and rocks. Most of the views, which seemed insufficient to us anyway given the promotional materials, were on the other side of the train. We were told by a staff person after the train left the station that our side was not good for sites going, but coming back we would be happy. Since the train repeated the same route on the return trip, there was nothing new for us to see. When the train stopped for an hour break, the walk to restaurants for lunch was too far for those who walked slowly to attempt. We ended up buying lunch on the train, a $6 hamburger which ended up giving us stomachaches. We would have been better off spending our time driving through the Smoky Mountain Park again.
