“Our home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2009

I am an employee of a major hotel chain. I could stay at the inn in Brevard at an employee rate. I would pass that up every time to stay here. This is like visiting our parents. They treat you like you are family. You don't get that at a hotel. Tom and Mary are very special people. You matter to them. We have had a lot of fun just visiting them and relaxing and enjoying the views, watching the cows and chickens at the farm in the valley. If you don't want to get away from the stress of city living, going to work, deadlines, and other job pressures, then this place ain't for you. On the other hand, this is just the place to escape all this.

The Pines is a wonderful retreat with the owners the best innkeepers. Mary greeted us and we instantly felt at home. The rooms are peaceful and simple decorated. The Inn is over 200 years old and a beautiful home. Mary cooked the most delicious breakfast. The Inn is overlooking the valley with cow pastures. A very peaceful retreat. Brevard is such a wonderful town with the Pisgah forest close by and many places to visit. A wonderful weekend. Highly recommend this Inn.

  • Liked — the Inn was charming and tranquil
  • Disliked — we were in heat wave and no a.c.

The owners and their daughter went out of their way to make us comfortable and to see to all our needs. They were SUPER nice people and we enjoyed talking with them. The B&B was very clean and the breakfast each morning was excellent. The view was awesome and we were totally relaxed. We loved the old house. The only drawback was that there was no air conditioning and of course we realize that would not be possible in an older large home. There were two fans in the room to use and I used one as I got ready for a wedding, but that was the only time. We were NOT uncomfortable, but if we went there in the heat of summer and needed to attend formal gatherings, it could be uncomfortable getting dressed in formal wear under those conditions. Having said that, since I have not stayed there at the height of summer, I could be mistaken and find it comfortable no matter what the outside temperature was. The price was also very reasonable. We recommend the Inn and would stay again as well. We enjoyed our stay.

After reading all the reviews, I thought I had found a great place. True, the location/view is pastoral, and the porch is very nice, but there were lots of draw-backs. The owners are in their early 80s and were excellent hosts. (The son should be seen and not heard, as he gave a prime example of why relations should not work together.) The place was very clean, and the breakfast was average. The dining room and the front porch are the high-lights of the home. The home was built in the 1880s, and was renovated 30 years ago, and from the looks of it, that was the last renovation. Everything is dated - not period - just old. There are repairs needed everywhere. Our room had windows with broken panes, and the bathroom door was split and cracked all over. The ceiling in the bathroom was plywood - one painted and the other not. The tub had a window that the panes had been painted and were pealing, hidden with a cheap plastic curtain. The handles on the faucets in the sink were gone and the water had to be turned on by grabbing the top and turning. The tub had 'hot' and 'cold' written in magic marker on the wall above the respective handles. The only electric outlet was a plug in the light fixture above the mirror. We knew there was no air-conditioning before we got there, but while we were out for the evening, someone shut the windows in our room, and it was very stuffy when we got back. I was also given a quote over the phone that changed when I arrived. It is not a horrible place, but really could use some up-dating, or lowering of prices to match the accommodations.

Mary and Tommy, the innkeepers, make you feel like you are family. One of our best times was sitting on the screened front porch one Fourth of July evening, chatting with Tommy, Mary, and others, and watching the fireworks.
I have stayed at the Pines over a 12-year period and have sampled all the accommodations, the cabins and the hotel. Everything is cozy, clean, and comfortable. The breakfast is the best around, including the coffee!

Two couples stayed in the "Gateway" cottage which had two bedrooms, two baths, a living room and kitchen. It had a lovely porch with rocking chairs overlooking pastures and mountains. It is a rustic cabin but clean and inviting. This is more of a B&B than a hotel. The main house has 18 rooms each with a private bath. A wonderful breakfast is included in their unbelievable low prices! The owners Mary and Tom are delightful hosts. We definitely will return.

Absolutely the best experience !

The whole visit was magnificent and the breakfast each morning are incredible.
Took two children 8 & 10, and the encounters in the evenings with the fireflies from our front porch was a front row seat to natures' best light show.

Tom & Mary ( Innkeepers ) are the best ! And the history and insight gained during our visit will forever remain in our hearts. We each truly loved our stay at this beautiful mountain retreat. The Balthis Family.... South Carolina
