“Mountain sheik, eclectic, and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

Square root was a great surprise find in this quaint town. Sat at the bar but it had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The dining area was spacious with cool art on the walls and the bar area was separate and offered bar and high-top seating.

We started off sharing a bowl of a fresh made soup. A black bean and corn southwest chowder. Delicious. The presentation was excellent as a artsy swirl of sour cream and an artisan type bread roll made it photo worthy. The Dagwood sandwich is a meal in itself but comes with a side. Stacked higher that you can open your mouth to bite, it's a fun and tasty challenge to eat. Loaded with fresh sliced meats mostly of the Italian variety with fresh veggie toppings and served on a large fresh bakery roll. Thin cut shoe string fries made taking some of this plate home inevitable. Our other meal was the daily special. A chipotle glazed pork wrap sandwich with sautéed onions and some kind of drizzle and pepper jack cheese. It was delicious and was paired with choice of sides. In this case, homemade corkscrew macaroni and smoked cheese with bacon. Nothing more need be said other than...YUM!

The service was great as was the atmosphere. They offered a nice selection of draft beers including many local and regional brewers. They had the standard domestics too and a full bar and wines. They do have happy hour and offer significant discounts through Restaurant.com. If your not familiar with that site, for $10 you can purchase a $25 gift cert. best of all once you've bought a few times they offer discounts on the purchase price and it goes as low as $2!

We used one of those certificates, so our meal was a steal! Without it the Square Root seemed a pretty solid value. It wasn't cheap but not expensive either. The food was great and they were generous offerings. Will definitely go back if we ever return.

“Good food and drink in a warm, friendly atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

We were in the area to fish with the good folks at the Davidson River Outfitters. After a great but exhausting day on the river we were looking for a comfortable place to debrief the adventures of the day and relax with a quiet meal in a cozy setting. The Square Root was the perfect tonic. They found us a spot in the corner of the busy room, offered us a great bottle of wine (at half price! - their Tuesday evening wine promotion) as we looked over their quite interesting menu. My companion chose the duck breast and I went for the grilled scallops. We couldn't have been more pleased. The meal was delicious, the service attentive yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is bit off the beaten track, tucked in an alley off Main St., but well worth the hunt.

“The food is really good, service was good, reservations are a joke”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

I have been here on several occasions, the food is always good from the turkey sandwich, eggplant dish, and juicy hamburgers. The problem is, especially for the locals, they can't handle large parties (6 or more). They made it right the last time but note who you make reservations with. Service is friendly. We didn't have a groupon, so it wasn't because we were taking advantage, but they just can't get it together for seating/reservations.

“always go for lunch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

I have gone here a few times over the years. Some really bad to good experiences. The place has changed owners. It has been inconsistent for sure. My dinner experiences have mostly been poor. I love the atmosphere and friendly staff. I don't ever go for dinner anymore. But have found I love their turkey sandwich with the fried jalopenos and avocado mayo. And their zucchini fries are great! So I go for this lunch every few months.

“Satisfactory. Fine tune”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013 via mobile

Overall this was a good experience and I would go back. Things to be aware of though. My wife and I ordered the calamari to start with and it was good but there was a lot of fried batter underneath the calamari. The traditional sauce was good but the Asian sauce was extremely salty. The salads were good and the dressings were wonderful and made in house. Under recommendation of the waitress I ordered the pork strip stake and it was wonderful. Very juicy and the apples and sauce very good. However I did think it needed just a little something else to really make it stand out from anywhere else. My wife got the trout casino with mashed potatoes. She thought the trout was over breaded with Panko and did not have much flavor. It needed some citrus flavor to make the well cooked trout more flavorful. The mashed side was not good at all the potatoes were dry and had no flavor. Over a good e perience I would simply fine tune something's. Also know you need reservations for dinner.
