“NOT ON THEIR GAME - Disappointing !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

We had heard about this for years and finally got to eat at the well reviewed Gamekeeper and we were incredibly disappointed! Our reservations were ready and we were seated at the table right by the front door, considering we made reservations about a month in advance and the majority of the restaurant was empty we were not really pleased with our table. The restaurant is painted lime green(not at all appealing for a white linen high priced restaurant) and the only staff we saw all looked like very young college age kids. But we were ready to eat some meat so we sat back and waited to be awed. We all agreed the bread was one of the best things we were served. The sampler of meats we shared was luke warm, the sauces basic, not a lot of flavor. But we anticipated our main courses to be superb - not. Although all of our meats were prepared properly they were not seasoned AT ALL and although we normally never ask for salt and pepper we did that night. Side dishes with the meat were bland and boring, not to mention very small portions. We were so over it we did not even stay for coffee and desert. The GameKeeper is definitely not on it's game!

“Always a treat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

I have been to The Gamekeeper numerous times over the past several years. It's always our family's first choice for a special dinner out....anniversaries, birthdays, entertaining out-of-town guests, etc. The food, the service, and the atmosphere make it a favorite in the Boone/Blowing Rock area. I love the summer sunsets from the deck as well as the cozy wood-burning fireplace in the winter. The restaurant building itself is rustic, but comfortable, and the staff make us feel right at home. If you don't feel like eating "game", there's always a nice vegetarian and seafood option available. Wonderful wine list, too. And scrumptious desserts! Never disappoints.

“Excellent service, fantastic food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

When I asked for dining recommendations for Boone/Blowing Rock, I was inundated with praise from friends about the Gamekeeper, and I was not disappointed. The food top notch and my server offered well-informed opinions about the dishes. Unless a meal is extremely good, I won't remember it, so it's saying something that I remember everything I had that evening.

“Would return again in a heartbeat.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

Celebrating Graduation weekend so place was very busy. Beautiful setting up on the mountain, very relaxing (but drink accordingly - it's a fun ride down) Enjoyed the Mixed Grill app - ostrich, bison, sausages and the Charcuterie platter - duck rillettes were wonderful and the star of the show was the Rabbit Liver Mush. YUM Grilled Escarole Salad was a good balance of flavors and textures. The rabbit entree was delish - still thinking about the rib rack that was left with just a tad of meat and roasted to crisp tenderness. Bison steak was good as well. I had the Red grouper with corn pudding which was very good. Even shared a dessert - the cheesecake which was light and airy - like a foam. Not baked and dense. Wine list is priced fairly with enough selections to find something that will suite all. Excellent evening and might go back to Boone just to go there!

“Why did we wait so long.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

Everytime we're in Boone we drive by this place 2-3 times. We always thought it would be too country club and overpriced --but it was our 25ht wedding anniversary and we wanted to splurge.

While they do attract a well-heeled clientele--we were treated with courtesy and had a great evening. The decor is great, our server was friendly, knowledgeable and she was super nice about wine tastings--at one point my wife had three tastings in front of her! We ordered the mixed grill--a great way to sample the exotic meats and our server told us "Don't even try and eat the whole thing--take it home and eat it for breakfast with eggs." Brilliant. We split a grilled salad (which they brought out on two plates, very considerate) and we had the salmon and the duck confit. Both were great--and we had enough left overs for dinner the next night. We'll be back.
