“Romantic atmosphere but food was over priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013 via mobile

The atmosphere was very nice and the service was great. My husband and I both thought the food was a bit over priced. We probably will not go back

“Rehearsal Dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

We held our rehearsal dinner here. The food was outstanding. The staff was great and Wendy was very flexible to work with. Our guests had a great time. Overall excellent experience. We would highly recommend.

“Quality of food and service seems to have declined”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

Gameskeeper Restaurant is a place we eat plan on eating at on every visit to Blowing Rock. My husband and I made reservations for an evening in November 2012 and were disappointed. The menu had changed and it was difficult making a decision of what to order because nothing stood out. There were fewer options to choose from. The menu was very limited. My husband had wanted to order the pheasant again but this was no longer on menu. We ordered a vegetable plate to share because at one time this dish was served on a platter and was hard to finish because they served a large selection of vegetables and the portions were generous. This trip, the vegetables were served on a regular plate and about 1-2 Tablespoons of each vegetable were served. The Vegetable Plate is offered as a main course although if one person ordered this they would still be hungry. This menu item was not as it once was. We each ordered another entree which was okay but nothing to come back for. The service was also not the same attentive wait staff. The server was slow and did not have the personality as other servers in past visits. When it was time for dessert the only dessert which was the same as before was the sorbet. This was very good. I am wondering if Gamekeepers is under new management and quality and price have declined with the change? The cost of eating at Gamekeepers was always expensive but the menu selections, the quality of food and the wonderful attentive wait staff made the cost worth the visit.

“Second Chance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

The restuarant was much bigger than I had imagined, which made it feel not as intimate. We were not impressed with the small portions of the venison. Must have been a tiny deer to have such tiny chops. The trout was excellent though. We will definitely go back for a second chance.

“A dinner salvaged”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

We'd dressed up as much as we could, as we didn't realize we'd still be traveling on New Year's Eve, and we'd just been seated at a table in the furthest reaches of the restaurant after a brief wait at the bar. Approximately three seconds later, we realized we'd be suffering the whole meal -- a large and boisterous group was seated immediately behind us. The owner (?) discretely offered to move us to another room, and we reveled in the glorious silence at our new table. Thus ensconced, we proceeded to enjoy each and every wild and crazy course of the set menu -- a salad that included chestnut mousse, duck antipasti, oysters and tea gelatin (with collards!), and a wonderfully tender buffalo....as well as lots of things we could not identify. The one downside was our dessert being served with red velvet ice cream that had mostly all melted -- we'd forgotten it was supposed to be ice cream, so we didn't say anything, but we were reminded when the table across from ours was served an intact dish with a nice round scoop of ice cream. At a place where the meat is the focus, that wasn't a huge sin -- just a surprise and slight let-down. My petite sirah was not as good as the one I'd had the night before at Bistro Roca, so I ordered the pinot noir for my second glass. Otherwise, we had great service and a great meal, thanks to being moved away from the loud table!
