We used this hotel as a base of operations while we did some hiking and exploring in the area. It fit the bill, but I wouldn't recommend it as a destination.
The hotel is quite appealing and has a rustic kind of appearance and feel. Veranda wrap around one side and offer rocking chairs and a spot to have a coffee or snack. Not much of a view, though, unless you want to watch the traffic passing by. The best view of mountains is from the parking lot toward the adjoining car dealership. It has the usual amenities. Indoor pool is nice if the weather turns bad. Breakfast is a little weak, but you get what you pay for.
The front desk people were very helpful. Don't be afraid to ask them for recommendations or directions. They have maps they are happy to share and will mark with points of interest. My son (he's 27) took advantage of this and was presented with "The Drinking Man's Boone" map.
Boone is home to Appalachian State, so it does have a bit of a college town feel in spots. Parking is at a premium so be prepared to spend some time trying to find a place to park. There are several restaurants and shops within walking distance, if you consider a mile walking distance. There are sidewalks. Cabs are available and are reasonably priced.
We were more interested in attractions and hikes in the area so this location was good, not far to Grandfather Mountain or Linville Falls and Cavern.
