“Relaxing Stay Not Too Far Away!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2009

My wife and I were looking for a night or two away before the new year began, and I decided to take her to the Biltmore House. As I started looking at B&Bs in and around Asheville, I stumbled upon the Arbor House.

When comparing the Arbor House to other B&Bs, it looked like somewhere I could be comfortable. Many of the B&Bs in the area have Victorian style furniture, drapes, etc. That is not comfortable to me. The Arbor House is nicely furnished, yet it is in a way that made my wife and I feel very comfortable.

The house sits on Lake Tomahawk and has access to a 1/2 mile loop walking trail that circles the lake. It took us around 20 minutes to get into downtown Asheville & about the same to get to the Biltmore House. It's roughly a two hour drive from Winston Salem.

Our hosts were great and our time was very relaxing.

  • Liked — The great breakfasts with views of the lake and mountains.
  • Disliked — I have no complaints.

We first saw an ad for the Arbor House in the B&B section of "Our State" magazine. A follow-up telephone contact with the innkeeper Carolyn left a very positive impression. But wanting to explore the Blowing Rock, Boone area a bit, we were not sure about staying in Black Mountain because of the close proximity to our own home. We had wanted a getaway.

On our way to Boone we decided to make a quick stop in Black Mountain and take a look at the Arbor House "for future reference." Well, after we saw the breath-taking view of the mountains silhouetted as backdrop to the lake bathed in the afternoon sun we had no appetite for further travel that day. The hard decision was only which of the very tastefully decorated and appointed rooms to select for that night. What a surprise to find such a peaceful place in a natural setting within walking distance of the center of town!

Equally delightful, and delicious, was the hot breakfast the next morning lovingly prepared and served by the innkeepers. A woodfire in the fireplace in front of the dining table provided a glow that stayed with us the entire day.

As we continued our travel that day we kept comparing what we were seeing to the spectacular setting of the Arbor House. At day’s end we only hoped that Carolyn and Dave would still have a room available for another night. To our great delight we were able to secure the last available room and spend one more night and another wonderful breakfast with them.

The Arbor House is a wonderful B&B in a beautiful setting. The view from our room was absolutely gorgeous; the inn sits on the shore of Lake Tomahawk and has a wonderful view of the mountains. Carolyn and Dave, the owners, are charming, hospitable people that went out of their way to see that we were comfortable. They went the extra mile from cooking a nice breakfast, to providing us with a selection of dinner menus, to even stocking the refrigerator with chilled water, juices, and sodas. And my husband was pretty fond of the homemade cookies that they set out in the afternoons. The grounds are lovely as well, and filled with blooming flowers, encouraged by Carolyn's green thumb. Our room was cute and comfortable, and had a nice sitting area and a jacuzzi tub. We tried to get the Lookout Room with its private balcony, but it was already booked - guess that means we will just have to make a return trip someday! Black Mountain is a great little town full of shops, nice restaurants, and art galleries. We completed our trip with a visit to the Biltmore Estate, which is not to be missed, and only about 15 miles away. Honestly, this is one of the best B&BS we've seen and perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing, romantic getaway.

  • Liked — Beautiful views, Warm hospitality, Very clean, Great location, Thoughtful details, Nice decor
  • Disliked — Our room was close to the kitchen/dining area, so we could hear a bit of conversation/kitchen noise in the mornings, but we still loved it!

My fiance and I were looking for a beautiful and peaceful place to get married in picturesque Black Mountain. We looked at several Bed and Breakfasts in the area but both agreed that Arbor House was the perfect place for us. As soon as you walk in the front door a feeling of relaxation takes over. The tastefully decorated living area is very comfortable (especially the couch beside the fireplace) with an arrage of books and magazines to enjoy. The dining area is surrounded by windows with a breathtaking view of the mountains. When you step out of the deck you are surrounded by the beauty of Carolyn and Dave's lovely garden, the peace of Lake Tomahawk, and the mountains which provide an amazing backdrop. My fiance and I enjoyed several walks around the path of the lake which is only .55 miles once around. Our wedding took place on the back deck and was the perfect peaceful ceremony that we were hoping for. Our room (High Windy) was also wonderfully decorated with a great bed and high quality linens. The large bathroom stocked was stocked with everything we needed including a huge shower with jets on both sides. Last but certainly not least, Dave and Carolyn are WONDERFUL cooks and hosts. Their love for what they do is seen in every aspect of Arbor House, but really comes out in their cookiing. Whether it's blueberry stuffed French Toast, Crepes with eggs and ham, or fruit and scrambled eggs, you'll enjoy every bite. I've stayed at the Inn on Biltmore Estate a few times and it's lovely. But after my Arbor House experience, I can say most certainly that this will be my first choice when visiting the Black Mountain/Asheville area. Thanks Dave and Carolyn for a wonderful wedding (all your help planning!) and the perfect honeymoon! We look forward to seeing you again soon! LIsa and George

One of three houses sitting on Lake Tomohawk, Arbor House is truly a slice of heaven on earth. It offers meticulous gardens and panoramic views of the "Seven Sisters" peaks of Black Mountain. It also provides direct access to the walking/jogging path around the lake. The hosts, Carolyn and Dave were warm and informative. The breakfasts were delicious. We plan to book another stay soon.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this lovely Bed and Breakfast for the first time last summer and immediately fell in love with the beautiful house, the glorious surroundings and the charming hosts! We just returned from our second trip to the Arbor House....ENGAGED! My fiance proposed to me on the balcony of the Lookout room, overlooking Lake Tomohawk and the mountains! What a special memory for both of us!

This B+B is truly a delight! The rooms are tasteful and comfortable, the food is amazing and the hosts are delightful! We can't wait for our next trip to the Arbor House!
