“Absolute Best Bed & Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2008

Phenomenal B&B with amazing service, hospitality and food. Innkeepers, Doug and Jenny, are the most gracious hosts. Very attentive to guests needs. This B&B is in a league all by itself. Absolute best B&B in the south.

Greatly enjoyed this weekend at Red Rocker Inn, Black mountain is a quaint little country community and we felt right at home. We stayed in the Anniversary room and breakfast is included every morning with anything you can think of. Homemade applebutter, muffins, about 20 things to pick from for breakfast. The Inn has new owners as of this year and they are doing a great job. This was our first b&b and will not be our last. Do not miss the dinner. Prices are great and the food is out of this world. We plan on returning to this cozy home. Very quiet at night, there are no tv's in the room so be prepared to bring a laptop and movies. There is a movie gallery in town if you want to rent instead. Don't miss the desserts either. We did the Biltmore package that included 2 tickets and dinner for two including beverage and dessert and tip. You have to try the BUMPLE PIE, Oh my goodness. I say the best pie we have ever tasted. Blackberrie, strawberrie, rhubarb berry pie and also they had peppermint icecream pie covered in hot fudge. YUM! So they kill you with kindness, very lay'd back, you are left to yourselves through the day to do as you please. They keep a packed frig of water and soda to help yourself whenever you please. The only thing we would possibly change is to update the rooms to higher end furniture and decor, our bed looked like it came from Biglots. But look that aside because this place is worth the 10 minute drive from Asheville. God Bless The Winans formerly from MI now reside in Staley,NC

We loved this B and B... it had absolutely everything we were looking for! It is a charming property and our room felt quite luxurious, with great decor, comfort, and a wonderful fireplace. (we hated to leave the room!!) The breakfasts were delicious and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We definitely want to come back, and we highly recommend the red rocker inn!! It was the perfect relaxing, romantic get-away spot.

This was a terrific place to stay everything was crisp, clean and well cared for. The Inn was very inviting and the hosts, Jenny and Doug, could not have been nicer. We had a beautiful room. The food was outstanding. A lot of nice little touches. We hope to return.

For the last twenty years, we have been celebrating our Wedding Anniversary at the Red Rocker Inn. We have always found this cozy inn a special place to celebrate not only for the excellent accommodations and food but for the good friends we have met there. Sharing September anniversaries and having originally met at the Red Rocker, we now meet two other couples there each year who have become our dear friends.

Over the years, The Red Rocker Inn has consistently maintained its relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. We have had the pleasure of being hosted by three different groups of innkeepers across the years who share a desire to please their guests and provide an opportunity to rediscover a simpler time of conversation, meeting people, and recharging "life's batteries" so often used up in our daily rush of activities. In fact, the Red Rocker has new innkeepers this year. We are very impressed with their commitment to excellence and preserving the standards for which the Red Rocker is known.

The accommodations are excellent with each of their 17 guest rooms decorated in a different way. If you are looking for the latest high-tech accommodations with all the connects to the outside world, then the Red Rocker Inn may not be for you (there is one TV in the parlor and a pay phone in the hall); however, this is just the place to get away from the day-to-day hustle and find time to relax, talk to each other, read, enjoy the activities all around the Black Mountain/Asheville area, and meet new friends. The front porch lined with red rocking chairs draws guests to just sit, visit, and "rock" away your cares.

Then there is the food ... breakfast which is included in the room rate is outstanding. You can enjoy a full breakfast buffet with many regional selections. We especially enjoy some of the breakfast casseroles, cheese grits, and homemade granola. Dinner is a wonderful dinning experience with several entrees to choose from accompanied by the chef's soup, salad, and vegetable selections. My favorite entree is the fresh mountain trout. The portions are huge; so, you have to pace yourself and leave room for one of their ten homemade dessert selections. My favorite is the macaroon cookie ice cream pie or maybe the carrot cake.

For our group of friends, the Red Rocker Inn is like going home each year to see family. We book for the next year before we even leave the Inn each year. We are already looking forward to next September.

We recently stayed at this Bed & Breakfast because it supposedly was highly rated. My question is, By who??
The only good thing this place has going for it, is the breakfast. And, it most definately was not worth the $160. total for a one nights stay there. None of these small rooms have a tv, a phone, a hairdryer, just to mention a few amenities that most all places do have.
The shower was so small, you could only stand sideways. The mattress was old, uncomfortable and thin, not to mention I itched all night, why, I don't know. The pillows were worn, old, uncomfortable and flat. The room itself looked as if was furnished from "Big Lots" sidewalk sale!
This was a miserable, boring, expensive, sleepless night.
If you are looking for a great , clean comfortable, completely refurbished place to stay with every amenity, my advice is to go to Ramada Plaza in Asheville. The mattresses are new, everything is top notch. And best of all it cost $70.00 less.
The Red Rocker could be a nice place to stay, but it definately needs up dating and added amenities like tv, phone ect.

  • Liked — only one thing... The breakfast
  • Disliked — no tv, phone. Room was small, bed uncomfortable and decor was horrible

This was my husband's and my first stay at a B&B. We thought lack of privacy might be an issue for us, so avoided them in the past.
Our room was small, but acceptable. After viewing many of the other rooms, we found ours to be on the larger side.
The real problem was public space...stuffing 17 rooms with baths AND a large amount of space containing the restaurant leaves very little space for the guests to stretch out. Those red rockers on the smallish porch became extremely important. Competing for them and the very small living area in the house with the people waiting to be seated in the restaurant borderlined on insanity.
Had it not been for our genuine interest in Black Mountain (charming!) and the close vicinity to Asheville, we probably would not have spent an hour before our trip home looking at other B&B's in the immediate area...and found some much more to our liking.
So, while we will be staying at B&B's again in our future, we won't be returning to this one...and will watch out for others with dining on site!
