Owner description: Take a 15 minute ferry ride over to the pristine Outer Banks Island of Shackleford Banks, which is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. There you will be introduced to the Wild Horses of Shackleford Banks. This free roaming herd is believed to have descended from Horses that were brought here roughly 400 years ago, and still survive as one of the last isolated groups of wild horses in the US. You will help your guide track the horses and see first hand the fascinating behavior of horses in the wild, a rare experience with nature that you'll never forget. Bring your camera for pictures that will forever remind you of this amazing place and its fascinating inhabitants.

“Best part of my trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

I can see why its called the local favorite spot. Took the Outer Bank Ferry out to the Island mainly to see the wild horses. At $15 per adult person was well worth it. Was dropped off on the west end of the island were we headed to the interior to find the horses. We spotted a group about 15 minutes in by the shore of the Atlantic Ocean side. After observing the horses we walked the beach OMG the large shells we found were awesome. We heard that the shelling was fantastic and it was. We wanted to go back on our last day but the weather wouldn't let us. Its a must see and do if your there, I recommend doing it at the beginning of your vacation so you have time to go back again to this enjoyable island.

“Wish we had stayed longer!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

We enjoyed this tour so much! You have the option of staying as long as you wanted and we opted to stay about 3 hours...you can call to stay longer if you would like, but three hours in the sun was about all that we dared to stay!...The shelling was GREAT!..I found three sand dollars and was so excited!...but found other neat shells as well. We walked around the island and found about 10 of the wild horses which was neat...it is amazing that they survive on the island..would highly recommend this for families!

“Wild Horses !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

An EXCEPTIONAL experience! A short 15 min ferry ride to this island with an option of 2 or 4 hrs to stay and explore. LOTS of shells (bring a bag to collect). Found the horses after walking 1 hr---well worth it. We counted 10 with a young one (born in Dec. 2012). What a treat. A beautiful day--clear, mild breeze for Feb. Apparently "a calm before a storm" which happened the next evening. Bring water & food to make this enjoyable. And, of course, a camera. You won't be disappointed. The views are spectacular, especially climbing a sand dune to get a panoramic view. Please remember to pack out any trash--cans/bottles/paper/plastic, as there are no trash receptacles.

“Wild horses & the best shelling in the area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

We took Port City's tour of Shackleford Island which included the ferry to/from the island from either Morehead City or Beaufort and a 2 hour guided tour. We walked about the shore line as the guide (Jeannie) talked about the history of the area, the horses, etc. We did see two herds of the horses while we were on the island. We also found the best shells on the island - several very large Whelks, Olives and even three whole sand dollars.
There are not restroom facilites or trash cans on the island, so you have to take everything with you.

“Totally unique experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

The island is so beautiful and pristine, and the tour was great... we were treated to a real show when some of the horses decided to have a territorial dispute, and our guide was calling the shots blow by blow. The horse behavior was really cool.

The shells were great too.. came back with a bucket full
