We stayed at Smoketree this year and the year before - then in a room on an upper floor and our latest stay in the basement. So this rating actually takes into account the previous stay and this one. Previous stay was good and would rate it a 3 -- averaged with this stay's rating of 1, it comes out to a strong 2 overall.
Smoketree claims to have both smoking and non-smoking rooms when in fact all rooms are smoking. When they find out you require a non-smoking, they put an air cleaner in the room prior to your arrival. Both visits we were greeted with the faint smell of smoke along with the more dangerous, sticky residue from third hand smoke and tar over all the surfaces. If you're not sensitive to this you'd most likely rate the place higher and find it more appealing.
Compound that with putting us in the basement "studio" with barely enough room to move around, poor layout, and the occasional cockroach - you get the picture.
Interior and exterior are deteriorating, in need of major upgrades, worn carpets, old wall paper, and a good coat of paint. We didn't find it rustic, we found it shabby.

You'd think with three of them sitting around the lobby office, chatting about their day-to-day lives, at least one of them might fake enthusiasm when you ask an important question concerning your room, events in the area. Better yet, forget asking their advice. Overhearing advice about dining out, one of them directed a couple back to Boone. We found several great places to eat within a few miles of the place.
Needless to say, we've found better accomdations elsewhere in the High Country - OK, it's a couple bucks more, but the owner/operator is warm and friendly and we look forward to our visit next year. I'll report back on our stay.
As close to the lobby as possible. Turn down the basement rooms and ask for a room closest to the e...
