“Pleasant Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2006

I only stayed one night, but it was a good experience. First off, let me commend this hotel for accepting and accomodating pets. Very few hotels appear to do so in the area!

I stayed in a pet friendly room and you would never have guessed there had been dogs or cats there. The room looked to have been recently renovated, with everything in a rustic hunting lodge theme (no surprise, given the area, and the name of the hotel!). The beds were comfy, the place was clean, not a lot of frills, but a good place to stay. I hope I can stay longer next time.

The Best Western was a pleasant surprise after a long drive there. The staff was very friendly and made us feel at home for our three day stay. We didn't have any problems with our room and will definitely go back! Happy skiing!

During our recent visit, we had a very pleasant experience.
The staff was very courteous and helpful. At check in, we briefly mentioned one of our party was celebrating a birthday. When we came back to our room for the evening, we found a birthday "cup" full of little goodies!
This was a first, we thought it to be a very kind gesture.
The room was very well maintained, very clean. The "Fireside Restaurant" on site had excellent food and a wonderful staff as well. Check out, as expected was a "snap" also. I highly recommend this place. We are already planning a return visit.

I beleive this hotel was formerly the Holiday Inn. We stayed for three nights during March to go skiing at Sugar and Beech mountains. The hotel is close to both mountains (5 min and 15 min. respectively). The "mountain lodge" decor is great and the rooms are very clean. The property is well maintained and the pool and deck area looked inviting although we did not swim since it was too chilly. We did not try the restaurant but the hotel is centrally located in Banner Elk. We were very pleased with the hotel and would stay again. The fresh popcorn in the lobby was a nice touch!

What a lovely, charming mountain lodge! This hotel is perfect for the mountain traveler, and it's very family friendly - a beautiful green courtyard with plenty of room to horse around....and a heated swimming pool! My family grilled burgers and corn on the courtyard's gas grill. The hotel just completed a huge renovation. The two connecting rooms we had were brand new and beautifully furnished. Kudos on a great renovation job. The in-house Italian restaurant (that is apparently independent from the hotel) is wonderful, too. Come in hungry because portions are enormous. I jokingly "complained" to the hotel's General Manager about the portion size. In his own grumpy way, he claimed that he asked the chef to make big portions for him because he has such a big mouth. The backdrop of the hotel, the Appalachian mountains, is breathtaking and chock full of activities.....so much stuff that we couldn't do everything we had hoped to in a week-long vacation. Hiking trails and golf courses are minutes away. There are quaint shops in town and in neighboring towns such as Blowing Rock and Boone. There are some great restaurants in town, right down the street from the hotel (our favorite was the steak house). My family had such a great time at the hotel and the town of Banner Elk that I have planned my company's semiannual meeting at the hotel this July. The salesperson is one of the sweetest people I have met, and she was most accommodating in arranging the details for the meeting. All in all, we had an excellent, refreshing vacation at a very reasonable price. Oh yeah...and the hotel staff is wonderful, from the front desk crew to housekeepers to sales, everyone worked hard to treat us like royalty. Many thanks to the folks at the Holiday Inn - Banner Elk!!

Two of us went Banner Elk on the July 4, 2003 weekend and stayed at the Holiday Inn for two nights. It had some very good features, like a large outdoor heated swimming pool.

Okay, I'm struggling to think of anything fabulous. But, Banner Elk is a laid back kind of place, so the $price was reasonable and the seasonal special deal included two $12 vouchers for dinner at a privately-run Italian restaurant off the lobby. The food was very good ... and warning...one dish can serve three. Wait staff were all pleasant. The decor isn't fancy, but you can overlook that when the food is good. Split one appetizer and one main course and that will be plenty for two.

I saw the breakfast buffet...Ehh... no fresh fruit and typical southern with grits, scrambles, etc. The hotel's front-desk staff steered us to a Cafe in Banner Elk. PERFECT!

The rooms were clean but dated. I think most rooms had 2 doubles and a small round table with chairs. Hey, this is NOT a Florida resort. It was quiet at night -- even being July 4th.

It's a two-story complex with the pool in the inner courtyard. The backside faces an expansive green meadow going up a hillside. The front is right off the main road and the hotel is about 3 miles from downtown Banner Elk. There's not a lot a traffic on these roads after dark.

The inner courtyard had BBQ grills and picnic tables so, I guess you could cook. No fridge in room.

It's pet friendly. And, I think it has two dogs of its own. I didn't smell any pet odors or hear any barking. So, I had no problem with this option -- that more hotels should offer. Being a Platnium Holiday Inn card holder carried no weight, no upgrades, etc.

I would consider staying there again.
