“Wedding bliss!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

John and Lee have a stunning place here, and the hospitality is second to none. The accomodation was spotless and tastefully done with all the little touches you would expect from a boutique spot. The breakfast was lovely, so nice to have a change from normal cooked or continental ones on offer in your run of the mill hotels.
All we can say is that John and Lee even helped us by being our witnesses for our wedding on Lonely Bay, and that beach is a place which will stay in our hearts forever. Thanks so much to you both for making our stay just that extra bit special! Sarah & Si p.s we'd mark you more stars if we could! x x x x

- Old fashioned apartment with attention detail and huge backyard
- The house is a bit off-road
- Hosts are very warm and friendly like family
- Homemade healthy breakfast with gourmet factor
- There is a nice bar/restaurant in driving distance
- You should stay more than one night and also take some time to visit the area

My wife and I stayed here for three nights, and found the accomodation excellent, clean and spacious. This B&B gives you the benefit of having your own entrance, which is very handy.
John and Lee are very knowledgeable about the local area, very charming and cook a fantastic breakfast.
The area itself is lovely - a mix of farmland and white sandy beaches, some of which would not be out of place in Thailand or Malaysia. Though the water is freezing!
The local restaurants are OK, but across the ferry in nreaby Whitianga, the food is very good.

All-in-all, I thoroughly recommend this establishment.

Thank you Martin for your generous comments. We thought your observation regarding private entrances to the guest accomomdation was pertinent as this was a key preference from early surveys we conducted before designing our B & B. Pity about those cooler sea temperatures when you were here - that early summer was a bit unusual but now very pleasant ! Global warming ?!! We loved hosting you both, thank you for staying with us.

We spent the month of February traveling from one end of New Zealand to the other with another couple. We researched carefully and stayed in numerous charming B and B's and small inns. All four of us voted Flaxhaven as our favorite stay. John and Lee are charming, gracious hosts who have figured out a delightful balance between providing their guests with privacy and giving them an opportunity to interact with their hosts and learn more about the country. Both were important to us. We enjoyed the welcome beverages and a chance to talk with John and Lee more about the area upon arrival. We so appreciated having John and Lee sit down with us at breakfast giving us the opportunity to talk more in depth. But we also greatly appreciated the very private nature of the accommodations and the opportunity for us to sit with our friends under the charming arbor outside the cottage and enjoy the complimentary wine provided in complete privacy. As our friends were in the guest wing and we in the cottage, we had an opportunity to see both accommodations. Both are equally spacious, well designed for comfort and privacy and nicely furnished. Both have separate sitting rooms and a private patio. We preferred the cottage as the patio had more shade on a hot afternoon but you can't go wrong with either room.

Our only regret was that we had only scheduled two nights at Flaxhaven. We would have liked to stay longer. Flaxhaven is well situated to explore the Coromandel Peninsula and there is much of interest. John was particularly helpful in directing us to hidden gems as well as more noted attractions. The scenery is breathtaking. We enjoyed taking the passenger ferry to Whitianga and walking around the town. We also highly recommend walking to dinner at the Eggcentric cafe just down the road. Both John and Lee went out of their way on numerous occassions during our short stay to make sure all went well for us-- booked dinner reservations, provided us with freeway toll help on departure, etc, etc. They spent a great deal of time before building the B and B visiting other B and B's and thinking about what is important from the perspective of the guests. As four very seasoned travelers, we can happily say that they got it just right with Flaxhaven.

Flaxhaven Lodge was the first destination on our New Zealand tour! There were five of us in our group and John and Lee made us so comfortable from the moment we walked in the door--- greeting us with wine, friendly smiles, and great conversation. Upon arriving, they arranged our dinner for us at Eggsentric- a quaint and enjoyable local spot just down the road. The house itself is modern, beautifully furnished, and welcoming. Throughout our entire trip [which lasted a month], we never found a garden that was more immaculate! It was stunning-- beautifully manicured and it is so obvious that they take pride in every inch of their property!

We absolutely loved starting our day with their delicious and healthy breakfasts and we felt right at home around their table. They were so helpful with suggestions for sightseeing and dining, and impressed us with their extensive knowledge of the area! There are gorgeous trails accessible from the property.

John and Lee are truly in the right business--- what a joy it was to be introduced to New Zealand by such a pleasant and hospitable couple. We were so glad we stayed two nights, but wish we could have stayed more! Lee even sent us her scrumptious cookie recipe--- one we will cherish, along with our memories, for years to come.

-Chris, Judy, & Katie S.

Room Tip: You cannot go wrong! John and Lee made arrangements for a triple to accommodate our adult daughter...

Spending time with a lovely family like yours Judy is one of the things that makes our business so worthwhile. Thank you for your generous comments and for including the photo of the garden. However, l can assure you the garden is not always immaculate! l guess it is because you saw it in the Spring that it was especially tidy! We wish you all a very happy 2012.

My husband, 7-year old daughter and I stayed with Lee and John for two nights at the start of our North Island tour and loved it. Lee and John were great from the start, very welcoming and always managed to surprise us with thoughtful "extras" like age appropriate books, a nice wooden puzzle which our daughter loved and soft toys in the room for her upon arrival. They also made a special breakfast for her on her birthday and a nice card and balloons to go with it. Really made her feel special. I am lactose intolerant and they made sure I was well taken care of at breakfast. They have a lovely home and garden, and the guest wing which we stayed in had a separate bedroom and living room, both good sized and very private. I would without reservation recommend their place to anyone going to the area. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Thank you Travel- planner- Mum, we appreciate your generous comments especially as you are both widely travelled. As you know our place is not really set up for children so we were grateful for the way you accommodated the extra bed in your room. Ella was a delightful child and no trouble at all and we thoroughly enjoyed the company of the three of you.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Flaxhaven Lodge after spending Xmas with the rellies at Whangamata. We wanted to relax and enjoy this part of NZ where I had not been since I was a child. The b and b far surpassed what I had been expecting and we have seen a few, having been in the b and b business ourselves; there was a spacious bedroom, separate little lounge, roomy bathroom, separate toilet and two small patios from where you can view the lovely garden. Lee and John are wonderful hosts, going out of their way to make sure we were happy and the position, right by Shakespeare nature reserve is fantastic with Flaxhaven Bay 50 metres up the road, leading into Front Beach and on the other side, Cooks Beach 100 metres down the road. A little further around from Cooks Beach is Purangi Inlet, very sheltered and good for swimming. A good cafe (Eggcentric Cafe) close by and another excellent one (Go Vino)a short distance away at Cooks Beach. If you want to see the sights of Cathedral Cove, Hahei and Hot Water Beach, they are all within close range but we found all we needed right on the doorstep.
We really enjoyed our stay and hope to return next year. Thanks very much Lee and John.
