We went to Rottnest Island for a long weekend. The place is great and there is lot's of activities to do (cycling, walking, diving, snorkling). We stayed in the only hotel on the island expecting it to be a proper hotel. That was our first mistake. Coming of the ferry we went to the hotel which is located in the settlement area and close to the restaurant(s), shops and tourist information centre. 10 out of 10 for that. Going to reception was stepping into a small room (more a motel kind of thing) which more looked liked an small office. Reception closes at 4pm by the way. Going to the room was going to a motel. There were about 15 rooms (i'd reckon) and all of them very pretty small. There was a bathroom with shower/ bath. One double bed and a little counter and a flat screen tv. We paid close to $300 a night and thought we would get at least a bit of a view for that...not on this trip! The small window was looking out on a big AC unit at the back of the hotel.
Room service wasn't available. Breakfast neither. You could order breakfast, but then you had to do it before 4pm the day before and it would be delivered to you the same day you order it. The people at the hotel were generally friendly and we could leave our bags in the room on the day of departure as our ferry only left at 4.30pm. However, staying a few hours longer (we would've paid for that) was not offered.
My advise is that if you go, please lower your expectations of the accomodation at the Rottnest Hotel and you'll have a fantastic time! Don't go if you are used to luxurious hotels and resorts. No room service and the hotel is basicly the rooms and the reception area. I'd give this hotel 2.5 stars...
