“One for the budget traveller.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012 via mobile

We stayed here on the way back from shark bay. I wasn't expecting much thankfully. Once again WA standards are different from the rest of the world it seems..... Lonely Planet goes as far as saying this is a Boutique Hotel which is just plain wrong. The Priory is aesthetically pleasing old convent with gorgeous wooden floors and an old time feel. The bar and courtyard area are just lovely and you could gladly spend a hour or two with a couple of beers and a paper. Nice friendly bar staff. We ate; Food was very average. Anyway the rooms, the rooms, the rooms. Clean and basic but musty, no overhead lights, blinds which were filfty didn't pull up which was just as well because the window ledges were filfty with dust and dead bugs. Saying that bed and sheets were spotless and very comfortable. This is a great place for a budget traveller and should be marketed as such.

We have stopped overnight at the Priory enroute up north a few times now. We much prefer stopping in the lovely town of Dongara than Geraldton (sorry Gero!). We had the pleasure of chatting with the Managers (who are both local to the wheatbelt), who have both worked hard the last couple of years on the upkeep of this beauty. The Priory Hotel is clean, comfortable and affordable. The rooms have reverse cycle air cons and some have ensuites (although the communal bathrooms are fine). The Managers have worked hard to make it more family friendly too. Our kids loved the open outdoor fire, exploring the grounds, climbing the trees across the road on the banks of the Irwin river. We love this old building, it's not perfect, but it is has so much character... and so much potential. Appreciate her for what she is and instead of driving down the street and having 2nd thoughts give her a go... have a good look before you decide. Boring hotels / motels are in every towns... a gorgeous 1881 historic building isn't!

We recently stayed at the Priory as part of a business conference. The venue is absolutley gorgeous. It might not have the bells & whistles of a 5 star brand new build but it sure makes up for it in old style federation charm. We had the run of the property and were able to enjoy amazing winter sun on the broad balconies - magic! The staff at the Priory could not be more helpful and the food was first class. Excellent venue, excellent service.

The atmosphere was calm and peaceful and the restaurant nicely laid out and very clean. The main meal was lovely, very well prepared, cooked and presented and actually would have scored an excellent.

However;
The drinks were a tad limited as they do not offer coffee (they have no machine??) so you can only have water, fizzy drinks,wine or alcohol throughout your whole meal. The house wine is either a white dry or red dry only, this again may not suit all.

We also found the sweet menu very limited and not as vibrant or interesting as the main meal.

Overall the 'service' could have been better improved with some training. More information about what was actually available as a food choice at the point staff come on duty (i.e.; Specials) would also have been really helpful to both the staff serving and the customers eating.

A nice evening, in a lovely setting , but could have been so much better with a little more thought.

Room Tip: Don't fool yourself in that you need a sweet too, as the main meal is more than ample and the sw...

Not 5 star - but I didnt want that. I was working in the region and needed a base and the priory was perfect. Great hosts who really seem to enjoy the unique challenges of an historic building. I got a family room which was in a private area and had a nice wooden balcony to relax and complete my work whilst enjoying the old world charm of this hotel. Great bar onsite and some friendly and quirky visitors and locals to chat to after a hard days work. Located on the river in Pt Denison/Dongara so an oppprtunity for an afternoon stroll - all in all, very good value for money and a charming place to stay that is a bit different from the normal sad, standard motel rooms that you have to put up with in regional WA

Room Tip: Family room has private ensuite and is in a quiet corner of the hotel away from the action

This hotel has soooo much character, built in 1881. Originally was a convent. So it is rambling. The rooms are not 5 star but remember this is a country hotel with a tariff to match so good value. The staff were very friendly "country style", nothing was too much effort. The hotel is situated on the banks of the Irwin River within 5 minute walk from the centre of Dongara. Would I stay there again, most certainly will. A unique feature of the area is the local Surf Club runs the drive in movies during the summer on a Saturday night. Now going to the DRIVES is a great way to spend a few hours & raise much needed funds for the Surf Club. You could even walk to the DRIVES from the hotel in about 10 minutes, remember your deck chair.
