“expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2010

did the Monkey Mia experience as part of a 3 day coach trip. Having travelled 850km from Perth in one day with just 2 toilet breaks and a lunch break, arriving at Monkey Mia was hugely anticipated. The superior lodge that we had booked was clean and very pleasant, with ensuite, fridge & tv. As you are basically trapped at the resort there is nothing else there just you and nature, there are only 2 places to eat a bar and a resturant. The resturant only took bookings till 8pm and several of the dishes were not available, there were very few staff on I would hope that there would be more during high season and that they were a little more interested! The dolphin experience is good, but as previously said by others there are 30/50 people at a time trying to get to a dolphin. A trip to Rockingham is a cheaper and most probably a shorter journey to get to if you want to see dolphins in the wild. You need to spend a full day there really so if you do go, stay two nights don't do it in a day. It's expensive for what it is but there is no competion so they've gotcha

The Monkey Mia Dolphin Lodge has a wide range of accomodation options. From Beachfront villas, to hotel rooms, to backpacker dorms, to what we stayed in -- a grassy area for tents.

Camping here was fine. There are two grass areas on which you can throw up a tent anywhere. It costs $14 per person. Powered tent / caravan sites were more defined but also cost more money at $35 for two. We found the gass area just fine and we were not too close to our neighbours.

The Lodge ground has lots of shared amenities which were good. In the camping area was a large kitchen with lots of tables a free BBQ and a fridge. It was fine, but we prefered the kitchen in the backpacker dorm area (and you are allowed to use it even if camping!) This kitchen was more modern with several fridges and more work space. There was also a deep freeze and such.

Other amenities included -- clean toilets and showers (with loads of hot water.) Plus they had tennis courts, swimming pool and spa. The only one of these we used was the spa tub. It was small, but we were the only two in it so that was fine. However, the water was not all that hot so we quickly found ourselves shivering. Still it wasn't bad. There was also a fancy restuarant (we didn't try that) and a bar with pub grub. We had burgers here that were huge and pretty tasty. The wine was a bit below par, but oh well.

The best thing about Monkey Mia Dolphin Lodge is its proximity to the beach and the dolphins that come in every morning. This is the only accomodation option at the dolphin feeding place and from our tent site it took only about 3 minutes to walk to the dolphins. Much better than staying at the closest town which is still about 50km away. Especially since you need to be at the dolphin feeding spot at about 7:30 in the morning!!

And we do highly recommend coming to Monkey Mia to see the dolphins. They have been coming ashore for a feed every morning since sometime in the 1960s. They swim right aroung you, and if you get your hand up fast, you can actually be picked to feed them. Dan and I were both chosen!! It is amazing to be that close to wild dolphins.

So if you are heading to Monkey Mia stay here at the lodge, it has a great vibe and the employees were all very friendly.

Being the ONLY place you can say to see the famous Monkey Mia dolphins, they naturally dig your eyes out with the price. But it dosent live up to the hype.. Dont think u can get anywhere near the dolphins, like u did in the good old days. They make u stand in a line (50ppl or 300ppl) and they will pick a few people at random to give the dolphin a fish. Thats it. The Conservation people were quite rude, I mean I totally understand they are trying to protect the dolphins which is great, but their attitudes stink. It doesn’t entice you at all to go back. Which I did the year after and paid much more for a better place, thinking I just came at a bad time and Service would be better. Nope, still bad.

I really hope they get some competition up there, until then, its whatever u can get I suppose.

BEST
- Independant Wildlife boat cruises up there are amazing, huge catamarans take you around to see Dugongs, Dolphins, Turtles...and yes Sharks
- The Famous Dolphins of course!
- Garden rooms are not bad 6/10
- Clean water perfect for Boating
- Get in a 4WD and get out there! the scenery is breathtaking!

WORST
- Terrible Value, the price of a dirty chalet at the far end was the price of a suite at the Hilton In Perth
- Weather is disgusting NOV-MAR
- Terrible Service and attitude
- No cell reception. Their Phone rates are very expensive
- Small Deli for your own food, is quite pricey
- U gotta really love those dolphins to go through all this though.

BEWARE
- We found out by accident that there are Stonefish all around the Shark Bay region in the water :s their stingers are extreamly painful, so ask around before you go swimming where there is no one!

I would even go so far as to stay in Denham (20min - 1/2hr drive away) and just drive up to see the dolphins in the morning.

I was very dissappointed with our overall stay at Monkey Mia. The caravan site offered no shade and the white crushed shell surface (with no grassed areas) made the heat even worse. The toilet and shower blocks were far below the standard of other parks we have stayed in on the coral coast and desperately needed updating. They also didn't appear to have have been cleaned on a regular basis and were quite dirty and appalling really. They even smelt when you walked passed the block.

I definitely will not be recommending this accommodation to ANYONE!!!

There is an extra tax to enter the resort, 8 dollars per person per day. Reception was unmanned, with six of us waiting till someone eventually came out to check us in. The staff seemed irritated to be dealing with us.

The rooms are nothing special. We paid for one of the "Beachside Dolphin Units", which were described as 'perfect for catching the monkey mia water sunsets'. This is absolutely not true - the sunset is NOT visible from these units.

The shower was terrible - almost no hot water pressure, so we had to have cold showers every morning. The air conditioning unit vents directly onto the balcony making it unpleasant (noisy and hot) to sit out on the balcony. The dolphin units are two storey, with the balconies directly above each other - but the floor is slatted, so if you end up on the bottom, you are looking straight up people's skirts!! (and food, cigarette ash etc drops on top of you - horrible!) The walls are paper thin, and you can hear the slightest noise in adjacent rooms.

The opening hours for the single bar and restaurant are not great, and the service was very poor. The Boughshed Restaurant was manned by a single overworked member of staff each time we were there. The food was good, but the service took the edge off.

On arrival, we were offered a room charge card to bill items to our room - this was a mistake, as the card is only accepted at the boughshed and monkey bar, and meant that we had to wait for the reception office to open before checking out (8am) - there were several people waiting around at reception to check out because of this.

We took two of the wildlife cruises on the catamaran - these were excellent, with friendly great staff - we saw dugongs, turtles, dolphins and sharks. Along with seeing the dolphin feeding in the morning, this was the highlight of the trip.

It's a real shame, because this is a truly beautiful and breathtaking location, with the potential to be really great - but the poor service and lack lustre facilities ruin it.

Stayed on the second floor beach side dolphin units (81 paces to bar). The view was outstanding. The resort was better than we expected & we wish we had stayed longer. Dolphin feeding is normally in the morning but the dolphins are around most of the time as well as lots of other sealife. The facililities were fantastic & the food good. We would definatley go back given the chance.

My husband and I visited Monkey Mia in the winter of 2008 and loved the beautiful location. We booked a shared ensuite room to save money and it was a great decision. Nothing fancy in the room, but it was private and clean. The hotel is remote, so the staff is sometimes poor...I imagine they have a hard time getting people to stay working at the hotel for extended periods of time. The staff problems mostly show in the restaurant. The service was really slow and the food wasn't very good, although it is expensive. My husband and I stayed for five days and by the fourth day we were no longer surprised by how bad it was. We just started finding it funny. For example, on more than one occasion we saw a dish we ordered come out of the kitchen, be delivered to the wrong table-who would refuse it-the server would look around confused, but not notice us waving at her- then turn around and take it back to the kitchen. It would then not come back out of the kitchen for another 30 minutes...delivered cold to the table. On another occasion I ordered chips and they were brought to the table still frozen. No kidding. Overall, though, the staff was friendly. The boat tours are a must-awesome trips and great guides. There is also an aboriginal walking tour available, which was highly recommended to us by friends and we loved it. The dolphions are amazing and so are the pelicans. They offer a tour out ot the pearl factory in the bay and we found that fascinating and purchased a couple pieces of jewelry while we were there. Overall, it was a great place. I'd love to go back, but I'd pack some food to take with me. ;-D
