“Good views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2008

We enjoyed our stay here and as with most paradors we were very well looked after. The room was not huge - but had a lovely view across the Mino valley to Portugal.

Breakfast was served in a rather strange marquee extension to the dining room. Whilst this would be lovely in the summer we were eating our meal with a thunder storm petling down and watching the puddles start to collect at the edges. Food was great though.

The parador is a little way out of town but a relatively easy walk (uphill there and downhill back) either along the river or a slightly longer but an easier gradient along the road.

We had a wonderful stay in this hotel. The hotel is set on the river banks and has great views and overlooks Portugal.

Our room was not large but had everything we needed, and was decorated to a high standard. The facilities for this hotel were great as it has a huge swimming pool and a tennis court.

Tui as a place is fabulous. The hotel is located just a 10 minute walk from the centre, which is a small town with winding streets leading up to the cathedral at the top of the town. It is very atmospheric on an evening and it was a real pleasure to spend time in this quaint town.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and as ever the Paradors met their normal high standard.

This is a recently upgraded member of the Spanish Parador chain, upmarket hotels (with some government financial involvement) of three-star level and above. This is a four. We only stayed one night, but our room, with its pleasant view over the Minho River (the border between Spain and northern Portugal) was very large and comfortable. I suspect we were upgraded from the standard double we had booked.

For the warmer months, the Parador has lovely grounds and outdoor facilities, and would make a good base for touring the region – I’m not sure that Tui (Spain) and Valença (Portugal) themselves are all that captivating and wouldn’t justify a long stay on their own. From what I could see of Valença’s Pousada (Portugal’s equivalent of Paradors), I would choose Tui as my base.

The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The breakfast buffet was excellent (but quite expensive), catering for a a wide range of tastes. Our dinner was OK, but we thought it was expensive given the standard of the food and presentation – but maybe that’s our Australian expectations. We found Europe generally expensive for food since the introduction of the Euro. We got a low season deal on our accommodation, but ordinarily it would have been EURO 100 plus extras – so not particularly cheap.

Just returned from a fantastic week here. Paid extra for a huge suite - our sitting room had a dual aspect balcony overlooking Portugal. Both rooms had TV with satelite and remote internet access at extra (reasonable) cost.

The staff were extremely friendly and the hotel clean and quiet. The restaurant keeps the same menu for a calendar month, so it would be a bit boring if you are staying more than a night or two.

An open air pool sits on lawns below the hotel and is extremely clean. The town of Tui is very unspoilt and not geared up for tourists. Just ten minutes walk from the hotel along the road and a few minutes more along the riverbank. There are few places to eat in the town but you can search some out.

We had a car so made some great trips out to Portugal, Santiago de Compostella and Baiona (our favourite). A new toll motorway south of Vigo has just opened and you should take that as it avoids some complicated junctions on the old motorway. There are three tolls if driving from Santiago, totalling about 8 euros.

I have stayed in few nicer hotels - small and friendly in an excellent location.
