“Magical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

L'Abbaye Chateau de Camon is truly magical. The over-riding instinct on leaving Camon is not to tell a soul about this very special place. However the seemingly high number of return guests suggest that others have discovered the joys of Camon long before us. Don't think you are going to stay in a hotel, it is far far better that; to experience the atmosphere that the owners have created in their beautiful home is a privilege.

Room Tip: Get a first floor bedroom if one is available.

L'Abbaye Chateau de Camon, a timeless and serene former monastery and chateau in one of France's "Most Beautiful Villages", is spectacular without being pretentious or overdone. Our room, at the top of a long spiral stone staircase, was elegant and sumptuous, with a view of the snow-covered Pyrenees in the distance. The keepers of the chateau, Katie and Peter, offered us a separate room for our son. Throughout our stay, we were impressed by the interest and concern they showed their guests. You definitely want to reserve for dinner, as the food is equal to the setting! Chef Tom Sleigh's menu was elegant and delicious, with an innovative edge. Morning breakfasts were a wonderful assemblage of breads, cheeses, homemade jams, sausages and ham. Mornings on the terrace, with a sweeping pastoral view, made for memorable family breakfasts. This magical destination in a quiet and unspoiled corner of France is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: We stayed in the spectacular Levis suite, but all of the rooms we saw were lovely.

Fantastic experience. The Abbay and its grounds are even lovelier than all of the pictures. The dinners were amazing! Breakfast was very nice and the outdoor seating spectacular.

What a charming place that is so different from the usual! We arrived at 11 pm after being diverted to Barcelona and then being coached back up to Perpignan Airport to pick up our hire car.Katie waited up for us and brought us out some cheese, cold meats, bread and a glass of wine. This was just one example of the hospitality extended to us during our four day stay here in Camon. Our room looked over the beautiful garden. The room was spotless with all the facilities one would would expect in such luxurious accomadation. The building itself was once a Benedictine Monastery so don't expect lifts or even fancy staircases.Breakfast was delightful with a fantastic selection of fresh fruit, cold meats, cheese and fresh bread each morning served either in the dining room or outside on the terrace. The tasting dinner menu was excellent ,huge in flavour and quality and excellent value at 42 Euro.
Nothing was too much trouble for Katie and Peter who simply are fantastic hosts. If you are looking for a totally different experience then look no further than Abbaye de Camon. It is such a haven of peace with only one small shop in a village where every house has a beautiful rose growing outside. No wonder Camon is considered to be one of the prettiest villages in France!

We recently had our wedding at L`Abbaye Chateau De Camon and to say it exceeded our expectations is a gross underestatement. We cannot thank the hosts Katie and Peter Lawson, and their staff enough for their commitment and hard work to make our wedding day perfect. The day presented several challenges including a huge afternoon thunderstorm that threatened to end the festivities prematurely but thanks to the flexibility and good humour of all the staff ,the day continued into the small hours. A huge thanks must also go to chef Tom Sleigh for presenting a meal for 70 people that had the attention to detail of a michelin star restuarant. In the face of time / weather delays the beef wellington is still being talked about one month later. It was an exceptiontal culinary performance throughout the weekend. The hosting skills of Katie and Peter was a joy to behold at times as they entertained the younger guests throughout the day with DVDs as well as providing an attentive service to the other 60+ guests.
The rooms are individual, full of character with sublime views across the Ariege countryside. The chateau is a journey back in time and has been sympathetically preserved in a microcosm of the 10th century. Was an honour to spend the weekend in such wonderful surroundings.
We cannot thank you all enough, all guests loved the chateau and I have a feeling you may have some return visitors. It really was the perfect wedding venue.
Merci pour votre hospitalite. A bientot......

This is a magical place - one feels like one is staying in a fairytale castle - only with modern conveniences! The hospitality is wonderful; the rooms very spacious and comfortable - with elegantly outfitted modern ensuite bathrooms; the dinners some of the best I have ever eaten. And the breakfasts are delicious too. All in a most incredible setting, right in the village but just minutes from a beautiful woodland trail around the outskirts of the village.

Room Tip: We had the Jonquille room - beautiful!

This unique Abbey/Chateau is a fantastic example of the wonderful medevil/cathar masterpieces that are scattered all over this area of France. To be able to have an exquisite meal and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the owner/maitre d" Katie is a rare pleasure.Aperitives in the salon followed by a well crafted set menu was perfect. This is a very special place where attention to detail in every area is paramount,a 5 course menu for 42 euros per head(alcohol not included)was great value.

Room Tip: Book in advance and dictate any gastro" nuances as the menu is designed by the chef without opt...
