“Doesn't live up to the website”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2006

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for one night on September 4th. I had confirmed our arrival by telephone the day before, and that we required a space in the car park for that night; however, on arrival, the person behind the desk was under the impression that we hadn't confirmed and had no idea about the parking. The car park was full, so we had to find another space and get up early to feed the meter, which wasn't ideal.

Our room (#7) was clean and adequate, but did not live up to the promising website. It was very small and, rather bizarrely, had one wall (with shelves and cupboards) covered with very bright, garish print, and the other three a dingy beige. The bathroom, again, was clean but small. There was a nice window that looked out onto vineyards.

Breakfast was an additional 9 euros, which was a little steep for the amount and quality. However, the breakfast was perfectly adequate, and there was some nice fruit with a piece of bread, a croissant, a small slice of cheese and a yoghurt. Plus a glass of juice and tea or coffee.

Although difficult to get to by car, it is very centrally located in the lovely town. It wasn't a bad experience, but we certainly wouldn't stay here again.

  • Liked — Its location
  • Disliked — the dingy room
  • Tips/Secrets — If you want to stay here, it's worth paying more for a better room. St Emilion is well worth a visit, though.

We loved our stay at Auberge de la Commanderie. They accommodated our request for one room with a shower and one with a bathtub, and the rooms were quite large compared to most I've seen in France. One room looked out onto a vineyard, and the other had a lovely view of the nearby cloister. An unusual feature of our room was a set of large, deep shelves that held our suitcases. The bathrooms were very modern and spacious.
The staff at couldn't have been more helpful. Some of our luggage didn't make the transfer from Paris to Bordeaux, and the staff helped by receiving the luggage and putting it in our room so that we could be out exploring the town.

L'Auberge de la Commanderie is a beautiful hotel ideally located in the charming medieval town of St. Emilion. Our room was fine and boasted a full-sized stained glass window.

So- what is the problem? Bait and switch and a very rude manager. I was quoted a price of 75 Euros and had a reservation. When we checked out, the price was quoted at 95 Euros because we were given a room in the annex. We did not request the annex and certainly would never had chosen it because it lacked an elevator which was promised in the add and on their web-site.

Go- but check price on arrival and insist on the room reserved.

This is our ninth trip to France and we have never had any similar experience.
