“If traveling along the Uruguay coast, not worth the cost”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

We decided to book one day in Diablo at $35USD/bed at this hostel. After seeing the facilities, we decided one day was enough time because there are many more beautiful beaches along the Uruguay coast at cheaper prices and much better accommodations. We stayed in the 5 bed dorm, which was in a different building. It seems they build the bunk bed frames out of basic wood. The sleeping was uncomfortable because there are no separations on the top bunks. Meaning you can/will get kicked by another backpacker and/or your heads may touch if you move around too much. On their computers, gmail only worked on one. Lastly, one of the guy's urinals was broken and the outside bathroom was not ideal. If the price was $15USD, I could have lived with all these issues. The good parts: they have hot water and they offer bread, fruit and a really wonderful juice for breakfast. Overall: Not worth the price

My 'deluxe private suite' had stained sheets, dirty walls with squashed mosquitos and what looked like dried blood, broken toilet seat, faulty bathroom light which flashed intermittently or didn't work at all, shower rail that collapsed on me, sewage smell and cleaner left key in door and windows open on another occasion which wasn't great security wise. The charge differed each night - at it's height I paid US$176 and the cheapest was $110. There was no flexibility for a solo traveller so I paid effectively for 2 people each night. The kitchen was tiny and the fridge didn't look like it had been cleaned in a long time. The fruit at breakfast was cut up and left to go brown which attracted more flies - would make more sense just to leave the fruit whole. There were often not enough mugs or glasses to go round. If you're selling drinks, surely you can provide glasses or even plastic cups to go with them. On the whole the staff were very friendly and when I needed to bring their attention to each issue on a daily basis, it was usually dealt with promptly apart from a couple of occasions. Management listened to my concerns and agreed a discount, acknowledging things hadn't gone smoothly and were concerned about me leaving happy but at the same time suggesting my expectations had been too high. I appreciate it's a hostel and not a hotel, but speaking to many other travellers all said it was far too expensive and the standards were lower than other hostels they'd been in for less money. Computers could do with updating - One keyboard had most of the letters missing and the other's spacebar stuck constantly making typing a very slow process. My actual room was bright and roomy, very comfortable bed, hammock to swing on the balcony and lovely view. It was the corner room with two windows - the one next to mine wasn't nearly as nice - don't know if they paid the same. El Diablo Tranquilo was very sociable, had a chilled atmosphere and I met some great people. Experience would have been even better if standards improved and price was greatly reduced.

Room Tip: If you're going for the deluxe private suite - ask for the corner room with 2 windows.

Rooms are filthy, don't look behind the beds... Mattresses are uncomfortable. Not enough bathrooms per people (they built new sheds out back and crammed extra / cheaper beds there, but no extra bathrooms!)
Staff are disinterested and often rude!! They're either dancing with each other at reception or fighting over which music to blast...and are annoyed when you ask any advice. (The managers were actually great and efficient, but only seem to be around in the mornings..) I could list several things: staff not speaking English, not knowing anything about the bus systems; they have a van service to the bus station which you can book, but apparently it barely works - it was broken the day I needed it, and no one had the courtesy to tell me... (bus terminal is too far to walk with bags so you need to get a taxi!)
The location is the only good aspect - 2 blocks from the beach, but all the hostels are close by, so this isn't a draw card...
Would be acceptable if it were cheap, but for $40-48 /dorm bed!?! Not worth it.

Very good hostel, nice location (near the beach and downtown), clean bathrooms, parking place.
The music was always on, and played good one.
Breakfast-> was ok.
Facilities-> perfect, just what you need in order to make your own stuffs
Internet-> It wasn't too good, a bit slow & with dificulties to conect, but I think it's becouse of the are.

Room Tip: Privates are the best

Overpriced for what u get but we enjoyed our stay. We stayed in a 5 bed dorm and paid £18 a night. Good vibe there and very close to the beach.
Big downside for me was that there were puppies and they were overrun with fleas. I think one or two had a skin condition too which meant the poor things were itching the majority of the day and night outside our room crying in pain. Very upsetting. The dogs need to see a vet. We also got some washing done which was very expensive (most expensive in the 4 months of travelling). It smelt damp when we got it back and still had stains on the clothing

We stayed for two weekends, and both were excellent, got to meet some amazing people. Staff was very friendly and helpful in all aspects. We had a 10 dollar per person dinner the first weekend we stayed there and the food was outstanding. Wifi access is available but only in the reception area.Checkout time is at 12 and seems to be a little to early in the day. Rooms are a little small and overall becomes quite noisy if you are the kind of person that likes to sleep in. Bathrooms where always clean but during the rush hour you would have to wait to take a shower. I would recommend this hostel to anyone that is visiting punta del diablo for a holiday.

Room Tip: I would recommend the 10 sleeper mixed room as it had the most space to move around in. The other ro...
