“Couldn't even make a reservation !”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

We wrote this Hacienda because we had heard great things about it. We filled out the reservation form. They responded asking questions. I wrote back answering their questions and asking how we could pay. Very frustrating that we are trying to give them money, and we can't even give them any, That was April 29th. Still waiting to hear back...

Our family of four stayed at the Hacienda for one night after hiking at Cotopaxi. We were welcomed in the beautiful lounge with hot drinks and snacks. The lounge was warm and inviting and had a fire going in the fireplace and great views from the huge windows. We had reserved the family suite, which was more than adequate, with a double and two twin beds. It had a wood stove, which kept us warm and again had great views. Everywhere we went, there was a great view.

I think the thing I liked best about the inn was the subtle smell of the thatched roof which gently permeated the air. It was very delicate and most people wouldn't even notice it, but I really liked it. (and I usually can't stand smells like perfume and candles, etc.) We had dinner and breakfast at the Hacienda and I would definitely recommend both. The service was excellent as was the food. The vegetarian meals were delicious and I could have eaten that quinoa soup every day. Every place makes it their own way. I thought the prices were reasonable considering we were tourists. (However, I did have one pair of jeans laundered and I thought that was quite high).

Walking the grounds was lovely including seeing even more of the ring of volcanos as well as the farm animals. This is a beautiful, must see place. I would definitely recommend it.

We stayed at the Hacienda Porvenir for 3 nights in July 2012. Everyone in our family -- 2 adults and 2 boys ages 12 and 15 -- loved it. The hacienda is several km up a very bumpy and rutted road (I use the "road" loosely!) from the small town of Machachi, which is about an hours drive from downtown Quito. Due to the road, however, it takes awhile to get there -- you definitely don't want to just "pop-in" for the night. We drove in our rented SUV (and you do need a 4wd) but the hacienda staff will arrange transport from Quito if you ask. The hacienda is perched at the base of the Cotapaxi volcano and the highlight of our stay was the half-day horseback ride up into the mountains. The horses were well-behaved, the guide was patient and knowledgeable and the gear (chaps and ponchos) helps keep you warm since at that elevation it is cold even in the summer. The guide will set the difficulty of the ride to fit the experience of the riders. There are several hikes accessible from the hacienda, as well. The food was excellent; the staff friendly and we really enjoyed getting to know some of the other guests over card games in the cozy sitting room. The first night we stayed in the main building in a room for 4. That room was not available for the rest of our stay, but it turned out to be for the best. The room was comfortable enough, but it was just down the hall from the machais -- essentially cots with only blankets separating them from the hall. Accordingly, our room was rather noisy as the occupants of the machais stayed up late chatting and drinking and we could hear it all. For the rest of our stay, we had 2 hacienda rooms that opened into a common foyer. This was much better (although slightly more expensive.) The rooms were decorated nicely and were very clean and bright. The one warning I have is if you want to do the ziplines, which are not part of the hacienda, but located about 8 km away on a very bumpy road. You definitely need 4wd and also patience (we got lost and had to ask a passing pick-up for directions!) Having siad that, the ziplines were great fun and my kids, especially, loved them. The one trick is that the guides are almost all spanish-only speakers. If you don't speak decent spanish, you can't understand the directions and they won't let you do it. We were told that an english-speaking guide would be there for us. He wasn't. Luckily, our spanish skills combined with the patience of the guides made it work for us, but we would have been very disappointed otherwise.

Room Tip: The hacienda rooms are beautiful and recommended, especially the suites.

Hacienda Porvenir is a beautiful spot at the foot of Cotopaxi volcano. We enjoyed the self-guided hiking trails, as well as a guided tour of Cotopaxi (we made it to the base camp...huffing and puffing!) and Lake Limpiopungo, as well as some Inca ruins in the national park. A horseback ride into the hills was well worth it, and the boys very much enjoyed ziplining at Santa Rita, about an hour away. The hacienda is very welcoming with its fireplaces and hot tea and card games--the perfect place to nestle with a book and take a break from constant activity. The food was quite good, too (if overly salty--what is this love affair Ecuadorians have with their salt shaker??).

Room Tip: Wish we'd come straight from Quito without a side trip to the Amazon headwaters so we could have...

If you are looking for an all inclusive activity field Hacienda in the foothills of Cotopaxi National Park why not try the Hacienda Porvenir? I stayed there from Dec. 18 thru Dec. 22. The Hacienda is a working farm filled with charm. The owners are interested in your well being, comfort, and do a great job looking after you. Depending on arrangements (I booked through Adventure Life) the Hacienda will pickup you up in Quito. I had a second floor suite in what would have been the stables, I could see Cotopaxi from my windows.

The rooms are comfortable. A suite includes a small sitting area. The beds are firm but soft and the pillows more then comfortable. At night employees turn down your beg and insert a hot water bottle. There is also a small wood burning stove that employees light and you can add wood to as needed. In my upstairs room the tub was a bit tricky to climb into but the shower had endless hot water. Water on the Hacienda is filtered and staff will bring more fresh water to your room.

The main building consists of additional rooms, sitting area, and dining room. The sitting area is a comfy living room with fireplace that other travelers will gather in. After a day of hiking, rock climbing, horse back riding, mountain bike riding and other exploring you can relax in the living room while staff bring you a beverage of your choice.

The food is awesome. All of it is fresh and prepared on site. The kitchen staff are interested in your well being and want you to enjoy the food. My stay at the Hacienda was an awesome experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite with a view of Cotopaxi.

We stayed two nights at the hacienda porvenir in the suite rooms which are very cozy. Upon arrival we found out that most of the activities during our stay were sold out and that we should have booked them in advance but this was not mentioned when we made the booking. The food at the restaurant was good but the service was slow and not very coordinated. For of our group at a table of eight persons, four had finished their dinner while the rest was still waiting for their food to arrive. We asked about the possibility to climb Mt. Ruminuahui but were told us that it was impossible to find a guide on short notice.

Room Tip: take the suite rooms with wood stove, they are warm and cozy but also more expensive

A wonderful location near Cotopaxi. The rooms are comfortable and (thankfully) with heating. The hot water bottle was a great touch. The lounge is comfortable and the food and service very good. If you want to stay in beautiful surroundings just outside the Cotopaxi National Park this is a great place to choose.
