“Pleasantly surprised - exceeded all expectations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2010

Well run, homely, clean and comfortable, friendly staff and excellent food. We even managed to get one of their recipes. Facilities are very basic but very comfortable and relaxing. Definitely somewhere to go back to at the end of a hard day. Couple of pointers: no hairdryers - take your own. There are no credit card facilities (not unusual in Uganda) so take sufficent US $. If you are an animal lover there are 2 really great, gorgeous dobermans on the premises. Would definitely stay there again.

After the spectacular if scary descent into Kisoro there really is just one place to stay in Kisoro - Travellers Rest. I have stayed there on 2 separate occasions now and found the place to be friendly, relaxing and not interfering, giving a homely feel and an oasis away from the daily struggle of Kisoro life. The food is homely and the atmosphere relaxed. The rooms are a lot brighter than they were before and are spacious and comfortable. The garden is a haven for birdlife and helps maintain the relaxing atmosphere. Tours can easily be arranged from the hotel lounge or reception. The roaring fire and selecion of reading material is a real homely treat..

I can understand why some may complain, there was no duvet but the bed appeared clean and appearances count for a lot! There were bugs, but it's Africa! The lodge was beautiful, cheap massages, hot showers, excellent food, and wonderful staff. The local orphange came by and sang and danced for us which was truly an amazing experience. Would definitely stay here again!

My husband and I stayed at the Travelers Rest for two nights, it was by far our favorite hotel stay in East Africa. The room was very clean and spacious with two single beds, a table and 2 chairs and a large wardrobe. The en-suite bathroom was very nice, with wonderful hot water shower - just what you need after a day gorilla trekking. The grounds where very well kept. The communal areas of the hotel where lovely, the bar and lounge area with huge wood-burning fireplace very cozy. The buffet dinner was excellent, very tasty food and good variety. Breakfast is included and there is a good selection to choose from. A staff member takes your order for breakfast the night before so that your food is ready at the time you tell them. The boxed lunch are the norm - if you are in Africa for a while you will quickly become tired of boiled eggs! The management is a Dutch couple who are very informative about the area and are very concerned that you are having a wonderful time. The town of Kisoro is very small but has a selection of shops. We where able to walk around town without being followed or hassled which was a first during our stay in ease Africa. I would definitely stay at the Traveler's Rest again.

Traveller's Rest is one of the hotels from which you can create a base for gorilla treks in Uganda and Rwanda and also for golden monkey treks. It is owned by Gorilla Tours out of Kampala and currently has a Dutch manager who is convivial, knowledgeable about the area, well-traveled in Africa and is making a concerted effort to utilize the locals in an effort to stimulate the Kisoro economy.

While the main lodge was full, we were booked down the road at the Annex, also known as Noah's Ark. These rooms were sufficient and are run by a husband and wife team with what appears to be a daughter servicing the rooms. The spacious rooms, while not plush, were kept clean and were furnished with simple beds, most with mosquito nets, and a sitting area. Our shower did give us a little bit of a shock, literally, due to an exposed wire above the showerhead that was getting wet. When we called it to the attention of the owners they agreed that it should be fixed quickly. Hopefully it was fixed.

The main lodge is within walking distance and is what a lodge should be, with people interacting in the public areas. The bar has a wonderful stone fireplace, which is needed on some of the cooler nights. The bar serves cold beer and both patrons and drives alike co-mingle in the bar area and the conversation was stimulating for our family of two adults and three teens. We met U.N. workers, volunteers to the pygmy community nearby and tourists and drivers with interesting stories.

Dinner buffet is served at one seating time and the food was sufficient in both quality and quantity. The management here really cares that their guests are enjoying themselves. Breakfast was good, also and the packed lunches are standard fare for African safaris; nothing special, but sufficient.

While not the closest to the trekking areas (1 1/2-2hours drive to gorilla trekking starting point and 1/2 hour to golden monkey trek strarting point) it was nevertheless a good base from which we could view the primates. Two ladies went gorilla trekking in Rwanda one day, with very little hassle at the border, and did the Uganda gorilla trek the next day. Buy your permits in advance as a new touring/hotel company is establishing itself and will likely be awarded 6 of the 8 daily gorilla permits.

The courtyard area of the hotel is well-groomed and we were treated to a local group of drummers and dancers with whom we joined in for a great time. Again, the manager is helping these artists by providing for them a means to earn money while practicing their traditional arts. If you like meeting interesting people and prefer logging memorable experiences rather than logging the number of luxurious hotels you've stayed in, this place is for you!

  • Liked — The ambience which was created by the setting and the management.
  • Disliked — Not staying at the main lodge.

Traveler's Rest Hotel may be the best in town (as some reviewers and guidebooks say), but understand what this means. The rooms are dirty. There are bugs everywhere. I was not sure my bed linens had been cleaned anytime recently (duvet cover, no sheet). The one towel in the room had definitely seen better days.

If you don't care about room conditions, there are some redeeming features. The owner was definitely nice, as was the rest of the staff. The dinner was decent (and plentiful). Coffee or tea afterwards, however, could take 45 minutes. There was live dancing (a performance of cultural dances) from a local group one evening, and that was pleasant.

Seems to appeal to low budget and backpacking travelers. This is not what I am. So keep this in mind.

I am a Christian missionary working in Kisoro district with the Bufumbira tribe in the hills outside Kisoro Town. I have stayed at The Travellers Rest for the past 4 years with a fellow missionary. The hotel offers European comfort & ethos, but maintains an African atmosphere.

Every year we have stayed we have found the managers, who have always been Dutch, to be friendly & go out of their way to be helpful and nothing is too much trouble.

The rooms are comfortable & clean with European toilets & showers en-suite. The rooms are cleaned daily and bath towels are provided. You can also have your clothes cleaned for a nominal fee.

The food provided is excellent, both in the restaurant & the bar providing a wide range of choice. All varieties of soft and alcholic drinks are available in the bar along with tea & coffee.

I would highly recommend the Travellers Rest for missionaries and tourists alike.
