“Basic charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2011

We arrived in torrential rain and the road is not for the faint hearted - we had to leave our vehicle at the top of the drive and the walk down to the lodge is pretty slippery and steep but when you get there the staff are friendly and it is a cosy place situated right on the lake which is lovely. The tents are quite small but are comfortable and there is plenty of hot water even if the electricity is not always on. We enjoyed our meals here and you do get a choice.

During our travelling tour in south - west Uganda we had booked a three night stay because the highlight focus was " Gorilla tracking Nshongi family" . The location on the lake shore and panoramical views of surrounding hills and mountains are really exceptional and most facinating . On arrival , late afternoon we immediately realised the accomodation wasn't according to their website presentation especially facilities indoor the main building (small).
After checking in the receptionist showed us a list of which we had to select the main course for diner . Due to the fact we are staying near the lake we ordered fish ( catch of the day ) but finally this selection was rejected . From the proposed list we only could get 50% of the dishes ...The day after they should prepare " catch of the day " , finally no fish dishes with some excuses on top . That time we decided to cancell our third night and leaving after breakfast tomorrow . Food wasn't of great quality and very large dishes , ordered meat with peper sauce was served almost cold , french fries acceptable and stomach filling . Only the soup quality was above basic level . We are hoping other travellers enjoyed their stay more.
Dining room is small and candles on the table too small to show ingridients on your dish . This location has real potential to improve but should be reorganised and more professional manager(s) and staff implemented . We won't advise this location at all even taking into account you should respect African way of live style . Arrival after our gorilla tracking( late evening approx 08.00 pm ) and wet of rainshower no warm fire to dry the clothes inside even the shoes had to dry on the terrace in front of the tent ..... service very poor .
Future travellers : evaluate alternatives in advance and don't rely on the website at all

Room Tip: unsafe bathroom switches , socket for electrical shaving behind the door oppostie of the mirror, sli...

We travelled as a family to explore South-Western Uganda and decided on a whim to extend our itinerary from Kabale to Kisoro. Somehow, we decided to make it all the way to lake Mutanda and chose Nkuringo lodge for accomodation. The route to get there is not for the feeble of heart (or those afraid of heights) but the views over the lake and the Virunga volcanoes is just stupendous. Upon reaching the lodge after the long route from Kabale, and seeing the nice tented accomodation, we settle for them instead than for camping as originally planned . The staff was very welcoming and helpful, my husband and son had a blast taking a canoe trip and swimming with an extremely friendly fisherman recommended by the lodge. The main lodge is small and cozy with a nice chimney (useful as nights can be chilly) and again a direct view on the Virungas. Tents as indicated have all a view on the lake which you can enjoy thanks to the windows panes at the front. Last but not least, one can enjoy a nice hot shower with pressure before dozing in the absolute quietness and peacefulness of the location. Breakfast was nice and filling. Truely a little gem at the end of this world !
One point: this lodge is not very near to Nkuringo or Mgahinga parks and you need to take that into account when planning your trip (at least 1 hr each way I believe).

I visited this place when it was called Mgahinga Safari Lodge. It is now called Nkuringo Safari Lodge. Both the names are singularly inappropriate. It is neither in Mgahinga nor near Nkruringo. Is it a plot to mislead or just careless?
On my 2003 visit I felt its location superb and the access could have been better. Service was slack and there were problems with service levels.
I tried again this June and found the access better and there was evidence of improved service.
The Tents are on raised platforms and now have glazed doors instead of zipped flaps. This lets a lot more light into the tents. Check the platforms are level or the bed will need adjusting with bricks to stop you rolling out.
The facilities out back could do with upgrading as they are showing signs of wear and tear if not downright neglect. There is a now vehicular access closer to the Lodgings which was nice.
Food was nourishing and well cooked. Cold Beers from the Fridge. A minor grumble was the desire to 'do it by candlelight' . I prefer to see what is on my plate and they were happy to leave the lights on when requested. AND turn off/down the Musak!!
The plot is on a small spit of land jutting out into Lake Mutende about 30 minutes or so from Kisoro. Views over the lake to the Virungas in Rwanda is a classic African scene. The location is beautiful but sadly much deforestation has taken place since my last visit and it was not as birdy friendly as I remember. There is a decent swamp area further round the lake but much of the road is now linear villages and shambas.

There is a boat for trips on the lake etc., at 80,000TZ a time. A bit pricey.
Overall a nice place for a few nights but be prepared for an early start if you are Gorilla Trekking.

We had to spend a night in Kisoro, but we were reluctant to stay in the city, so we look for a comfortable place in the surrondings.
There is only 14 km. from Kisoro to this lodge, but the sight change completely: it seems an Asian landscape more than many lakes in Asia. Nkuringo is a very big lake with many mountainous islands wraps in mist. The landscape is more attractive than Bunyonyi Lake and the zone isn't touristic at all; in fact, we were the only guests in the lodge!!
The lodge is composed for few prebuilt tents comfy enough, with inside facilities. All of them look over the lake. Electricity and hot water (with nice pressure) supplies depend on generator that the staff switchs on at guests requirement. Staff is very helpful and attentive. The only inconvenient is that food is not really great, but not everything has to be wonderful!
In addition, they can arrange a marvelous sunset boat trip around the lake with coffee, tea or alcoholic beverage.
Definitively, a great find where we would return without doubt.
