Being tortoise fans we absolutely had to visit Prison island. The giant tortoises seem very healthy and happy there. The coral is very beautiful as well - better than what we saw at Mnemba, actually.
Prision Island was interesting but not as historical as I was expecting. The Tortoises are worth seeing, as well as the beautiful peacocks that roam the island. Beautiful spot to go snorkelling as well.
Loved this little trip - great snorkling, amazing seeing tortoises! No much of prison left (thanks god :) ). HIghly recommend !
Nice afternoon trip out to prison island - trip in small boat, some snorkelling and the tortoise sanctuary. Children loved it. Touch of history re Slave trade. Negotiate on pricing :-)
apart from the giant tortoises and the old slave prison and the really good opportunity to do some extra snorkeling there is not much to see. The island itself can be seen in one hour- visit the turtle place included. The view is really nice and it was only half hour dhow trip which we took in front of Tembo House Hotel to the island. Our guide told us that the island that is private will go into the hands of the government by the end of the year.
If you have seen most of the attractions in Stone Town, Prison Island is an overall interesting place.
