“Great Location and staff very helpful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

We stayed 3 nights in July. Location on the beach was superb. Close to all the shops in StoneTown, and the Foroghani Park where we had tea at the stalls set up there on Saturday night. The atmosphere of the hotel very in keeping with StoneTown. Rooms perhaps a bit small, and I guess a bit dated, but hotel doesn't pretend to be 5 star, and the room rates are very reasonable. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. We had a mixup with our transfer from the airport, and, although it wasn't the hotel's fault ( our tour company ) they moved us to a better room facing the sea on the upper level as a "recompense" which was very good of them.
Food in restaurant very good, they had the TV set up there too, so we could watch the Football World Cup ! The hotel doesn't serve alcohol, but recommend the Taperia Bar on the 2nd floor, just round the corner in Kenyatta Rd if you feel like a drink.
We did the usual "Spice Tour" which although interesting, disappointed they hardly grow any spices commercially any more, the ones they had for sale all from Malaysia !
Prison Island tour not worth doing. Not much out there, snorkelling just for a swim, coral very 2nd rate.
Summing up the Tembo is a reasonably priced hotel with great location on the beach in Stone Town

Room Tip: They are more expensive, but upper floor facing the beach is quieter than facing the street

We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel with the classy atmosphere.. We loved the old antiek furnuture and decoration. We stayed there to go on tours, which is much cheaper if you book there, than travelling from the North or South coast, and was well worth it. We enjoyed walking around the town and exploring the old buildings. It is better to take a local guide with you even if it's only to keep all the other sellers from your back. I would definetly recommend this hotel. Food delicious and staff very helpful. We only struggled to get our equipment charged as the brochures said it's the same but ours from SA didn't fit and we needed an adopter. Otherwise no problems.

Room Tip: Don't get a room close to the kitchen. It's very noisy.

We have just spent our second night of three nights in this hotel. Our first night in our first room was disappointing... Firstly the jug did not work but was rectified reasonably quickly. Secondly the bathroom door could not be kept shut consequently banged all night. Thirdly the aircon was extremely noisy. And finally the room overlooked the hotel entrance and street and was extremely noisy.
However on advising management we were promptly moved to another room which was extremely comfortable with a nice balcony and pool and ocean views.
The staff have been nothing but helpful and courteous but the restaurant is lacking professionalism.

Room Tip: Avoid room 21 or room overlooking the street.

The hotel, the decoration and the furniture are very nice but this establishment has a problem with its management. Some of the staff is helpful and welcoming, but others are incredibly indolent (and dirty! we saw one of them rolling pancakes with dirty hands and an other one with two hands in the nose...)
The Wifi does not work and the food is not good at all. You can go for the location and the decorum but don't pay for any food, there are lots of other restaurants in the area that are better, with good service and lower prices.

Hard to beat the location right on the beach near the port and most interesting points in Stone Town, plus in an historic, beautifully-restored property. Very atmospheric and worth it just for that. Staff try hard and seem genuinely interested in making your stay comfortable; and they keep the place spotlessly clean. However, many staff, especially in the bar/restaurant, need more training. Several didn't even know their own menu. Frequently hard to get something missing (salt, fork, etc...). It was busy while we were there, but not abnormally so. Often this sort of thing is a language issue, but I don't think so much in this case - I can usually spot and adjust for that. This seems something else. My theory: rapid development of local tourist industry drawing from a limited pool of talented labor, so some staff not as well "seasoned" (or with adequate, um..."basic skills"). A perhaps related issue: they seemed to have more trouble than average keeping the breakfast buffet stocked and with a suitable variety of foods to appease their culturally mixed cliental. We stayed three nights, and for three breakfasts it was barely-controlled chaos and many missing items. That was the only truly annoying aspect, mainly because it's easy to fix with better management; and many other, less well-endowed properties have no problems with this. Finally, one other blemish: low water pressure. But the staff were very responsive to that issue and did improve it to the point a shower was adequate, if still not good. That may be a consequence of a very old (if largely renovated) basic infrastructure in an old part of an old town. Our room was quite small, but artfully-decorated with antique bed and armoire and was comfortably en suite. Good A/C (you'll need it). Would we stay there again? Absolutely! We'd just dial up our patience meters even more than usual and plan to spend even more time gazing out on the water.

Room Tip: Hotel has three floors. Rooms on floors 2 and 3 overlooking the pool, which include balconies and a...

We had a pleasant stay in an upgraded room, the presidential suite. But no alcohol awailable at this hotel. The pool in the courtyard is nice. Do not swim in the sea outside hotel, water is heavily polluted.

We stayed at the Tembo hotel for one week and loved every minute about. The staff are all very friendly, the service is exceptional and there is a 24/7 cleaning regimen around the spotless hotel - the staff clean the public areas all day and all night. We stayed in a triple room and the sheets were changed everyday as well as the towels. The bathrooms are very clean too which I think is very important.
My only small criticism is that the WiFi service could be improved, it's good but not great.
Overall we are very happy with our stay and will definitely would return next time we visit stone town.

Room Tip: Either ask for a pool facing room or a sea view room. That way you get an amazing view of the boats...
