“A cool place to stay in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2011

The history, architecture and design make this a very good place to stay. Everyone on the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our ride was late, so the front desk clerk let us use his cell phone to call about it and then everyone kept an eye out for our ride. The location is super convenient to the main sites and the restaurant is right on the beach.

Stayed at the tempo hotel on my first night in Zanzibar. It was a pleasant basic African style hotel with decent service. It is well located for exploring stone town, close to all museums, shops and restaurants. Staff were friendly and service was good. Rooms are fine, basic but not your modern day hotel room but they were nice and clean. I enjoyed stone town and was happy to have seen it but glad I only chose 1 night as it is definitely enough.

We were so lucky to have found Tembo. We have booked with them via phone. They offered us a good rate as we arrived. The room was beautifully filled with antique furnitures. The bathroom is unique and clean. TV with good channels. The pool is so clean that I was looking for the daily swim and still miss it. Breakfast was awesome. Fresh coconut offered with eggs and delicious pancake etc. Best of all is the location. Tembo is so close to everything from ferry, post office (to mail home our souvenir), good restaurants and everything!

Tembo was our best choice and we loved the hotel. We checked out Emerson and other hotels during our walking tour. They are good but we agree that Tembo has the most (most others have no TV or Internet) and the best price.

This hotel was booked for me as a part of a package. The location is great - right in the middle of Stone Town near the harbor.

Pool, sundecks, free internet, AC and ceiling fans, mini fridge in the rooms.

The room I had was small and probably not one of the exclusive rooms, as I could see some rooms had balconies over the pool. While the tile in the bath was gorgeous, you had to remember to press the "Heat" button in the bedroom to heat the hot water 20-30 minutes before you wanted to use it. The water pressure for both the shower and toilet was weak. The room, being on the small side to start with, was overly cluttered with too much furniture. There was barely any room left for the suitcases. The drawers are so small and old that I didn't want to use them anyway. Two small complimentary water bottles were in the mini fridge.

The breakfast was OK - you can order eggs that are not put out at the buffet. The restaurant at the pool/beach area had a random mix of items from Chinese to Indian to Italian on the menu, but it was not very extensive. And you couldn't get half of the menu at lunch.

The 'beach' has some lounge chairs for sunbathing but it is right at the harbor with boats (anything from tourist dhows to huge internaltion tankers and frieght container ships) come to port right there, so I wouldn't want to be swimming in that water. The pool is fresh water and warm.

No alcohol is served at this hotel.

About 6:00pm, housekeeping will knock on your door, come in, close all of the windows, take down the mosquito netting, and the proceed the spray the entire room for mosquitos. At this time was when you turn the AC on otherwise the small room became stifling.

Stayed 3 nights and enjoyed the nice rooms, out-door area and swimming pool. Excellent location right by the beach in Stone Town.

Clean rooms of good standard with AC.

The best thing about our stay was meeting Jacob the manager of the hotel. He was absolutely fantastic! He speaks over 10 languages and I was very impressed that one of them was Greek - my language. He organised a nice room for us, a great "spice" tour and recommended various activities and restaurants.

The hotel itself is very interesting, a somewhat Moroccan build. Not ubber luxurious but a great location, right on the beach. I shared a room with 2 others and it was a very good size with our own balcony overlooking the sea.
We had 3 double beds. The bathroom was basic but clean.
Breakfast was not special but being able to sit right on the beach and enjoy a coffee was amazing.

Stayed here for two nights - location is perfect in stonetown but service leaves a lot to be desired. Finally comedy moment was when milk was brought to us at breakfast in a cup not a jug for a coffee and there was menu so was possible to understand what they had. The shower was rubbish - very weak and the room was cluttered with old furniture. This is a great place to stay in the middle of stone town for a short stay but not great for longer
