“Beautiful building in the heart of Stone Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

We stayed only one night in Stone Town and chose the Dhow Palace based on the reviews here. We were really happy with our stay. We had the Executive King Suite because we wanted a sea view and also wanted to stay in the old wing. However we did not realize that there are three flights of stairs!! Loved the open air shower! We did not have any of the meals so cannot speak for the restaurant. They gave us a boxed breakfast because we had an early morning flight to Arusha. The boxed meal was so-so. We didn't eat most of the stuff. Great location for walking to Forodhani Gardens and exploring the maze of alleyways. Would definitely stay there again if we ever visit Zanzibar (and I hope we do!) However I felt that one afternoon in Stone Town was more than enough.

Room Tip: The Executive King room is on the top floor with a double bed and an adjoining sitting room. Open ai...

Beautiful old building in the heart of the old city. Large room, quiet for Stone Town. Decent enough breakfast. Mosquito net on bed. Free wifi throughout the hotel. Restaurant was fairly average: I'd recommend a visit to the Emerson Spice Hotel for at least one meal. For alcohol the nearby Sunset Bar is a good choice.

Paid $80 USD per night directly to the hotel. Credit Cards accepted with no surcharge.

This is a lovely old hotel. The management has done a fine job of updating while retaining the charm of the original structure. There is a lovely pool in the center of the hotel and comfortable lobby areas.

The rooms are large, probably due to the age of the building. Of course there are some antiquated fixtures in the baths and they are beautiful. Where can you find intricate tile work in these days? We had comfortable air conditioning and a ceiling fan that provided welcome relief from the squelching heat in Stone Town. Service and maintenance were very responsive while we were there. A light fixture broke in the bath room during our visit and they quickly replaced it and cleaned up the broken glass.

The breakfast is plentiful and hearty! Wonderful coffee, a huge variety of breakfast foods: eggs, fresh baked breads and pastries, tropical fruits, local foods typical of Zanzibar. We really enjoyed the breakfasts! One day we requested room service and they promptly brought us some coffee.

This a great value-priced option in Stone Town, extremely convenient and close to great restaurants and shopping.

We only stayed one night here but could have stayed longer. The hotel is full of character. The rooms were very comfortable. The bathroom fittings were a bit rickety but they worked! We had a small balcony with views over the town's rooftops. The food was good. The pool is very small and is in a very public place but it looked nice. The staff were helpful and efficient. We would definitely stay here again. Grab a free map of Stonetown to find your way about and eat at the street market in the evening. It's cheap and interesting. Try the freshly pressed sugar cane and ginger drink, it was yummy.

A lovely, well renovated place that has a history and is in the very centre of Stonetown. The staff are super friendly and they packed me a huge breakfast when I had to depart very early. The price I negotiated was very competitive and I have no hesitations in recommending this hotel.

We stayed at the Dhow Palace for one night while visiting Stonetown. The hotel is an amazing find. Well located; beautiful individually furnished rooms and a fantastic attentive staff. Please try the mocktails - the bananarama was a particular favourite.

This hotel is a very interesting place to stay whilst in Stone town and is also located in a nice area. It was very close to all of the shops and the old fort is a 10 min walk away.

The staff in the restaurant area were very friendly.

I would recommend going to the lovely roof top terrace and relax with a soft drink (This hotel does not serve alcohol).

It’s a beautiful building and the rooms are all individual and the furniture is stunning.

The only negative thing to say was the bed was very uncomfortable...the mattress was hard so I did find it hard to sleep.

Dear katkin_11
Thank you for staying with us.
I am saddened to hear your wonderful experience with us was ruined because of the bed.
I am shocked because the mattresses that we use are according to hotel standards and it has been just over a year since we last changed them.
Could you please drop me an email (manager@dhowpalace-hotel.com) and enlighten me on what exactly was the problem and perhaps your room number if you remember so that we can investigate further.
Thank you for sharing your views with us.
Hope to see you back soon and this time you will have positives only.
