“Great place to relax and enjoy Stonetown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

We've now stayed at the Dhow Palace for the last three years for a bit of relaxation after volunteering & travelling in Tanzania. It's a beautiful hotel, full of history and charm. A great place to chill out with a book on the roof terrace or by the pool and a good base in the heart of Stonetown. The service has always been good, but we felt the staff seemed to have become even more friendly this year. Good a/c rooms, I think most have a balcony and I noticed they have cable tv which was a bonus as I could watch the English Premier League games in bed! Although we usually tend to go lower budget, the Dhow is good value for money and I doubt we'd stay anywhere else on future visits.

We stayed at Dhow Palace for a couple nights when we first arrived in Zanzibar and it was a wonderful experience. The hotel has been beautifullly restored and is located in a fantastic location in the heart of Stone Town (which really isn't big.) Staff were friendly and the breakfast buffet was plentiful. The pool is a lovely respite from the heat of Stone Town! The travel agency nearby easily arranged day trips for us.

My husband found Dhow Palace online and really liked room 40, so we stayed two nights to check out Stonetown. The architecture is in the traditional local style – the floors rise around a central courtyard with pool and restaurant. The landings on each floor are decorated with interesting artwork and furniture – it was fun to browse and look.

Room 40 is on the top floor (fourth floor) and has a nice view of the sea. There is a large sitting room with two couches, coffee table, desk, and flat screen TV. Curtains separate the bedroom, which has a mini fridge with small bottles of water and a coffee/tea pot. The bed is small and the pillows were a bit firm for our liking. Wi-fi is free in the room, but very slow. The coolest feature is the large outdoor tub/shower which was a great place to cool off after a hot walk.

A small buffet breakfast is included – there was fruit, pastries, coffee/tea, yogurt, and a few hot entrees (the Karachi was yummy). We didn’t try the restaurant for lunch or dinner. Note: the hotel does have a license to sell alcohol, but there are many restaurants and bars that do nearby.

The hotel is right in the middle of Stonetown and it is very easy to explore by foot. Just around the corner, Kenyatta Street has several cute shops (don’t miss Fahari). The beach is less than a five minute walk and there is a nice beach bar/restaurant where you can watch the beautiful sunset and local teens doing acrobatics in the sand.

Stonetown is a hot, hectic town and Dhow Palace is a charming, quiet place to relax.

Dear LoriBarber
Thank you for staying with us.
Good to hear you had a nice stay with the exception of the pillows and wifi.
Our bed in room 40 is a Standard King Size fitted with the pillows available on the market for the hotel standards. I'm sorry to hear they were a little firm for you.
As for the wi-fi, i do apologise for the slow connection during the time of your stay. However, Wi-Fi now is at a good speed thanks to the reliable power cable (connecting Zanzibar and Mainland - that caused power blackouts) and soon will be even better when Zanzibar will have high speed Cable Wire (Fibre Optic) for Internet.
Hope to see you back soon

We had a very pleasant few days in the Dhow Palace - great atmosphere in the heart of Stone Town. On checking out we were obliged to pay cash (about $500) for the room as the payment card links were down. The was inconvenient as we had to walk up to the bank again and were hurrying to catch a flight. However, the manager (unasked) gave us a discount, so, thanks folks, and we would love to return.

Room Tip: I was travelling with two adult daughters so they gave us a large room on the second floor with thre...

Dear michaelj703
Thank you for staying with us
I am sorry to learn that our credit card machine link was down. I appreciate the fact that you realised the problem was beyond our hands, we are now looking to put in place another POS from another Bank in the hope we would be able to avoid such incidents happening again.
As for myself giving you a discount, that is what Dhow Palace does "Services in Hospitality".
We would love to see you back soon rather than later

I have stayed at this hotel for at least a week for the past 4 years. It is a great location in the heart of the most historic part of Stonetown. The central courtyard and the swimming pool are like an oasis to shelter from the heat of the day. There are 2 types of bedroom depending on whether you stay in the old or new part. Whilst very different they are both excellent.
For me the best part is the staff, whether you are talking with the manager, receptionist, porter, room cleaner or doorman they are helpful, kind and interesting. Although most of the guests are tourists the hotel itself is an authentic Zanzibarian experience

Room Tip: New rooms have balconies over the pool. Old rooms have an amazing sense of history

We were booked in this hotel as part of a larger tour package. From the previous reviews I assumed that it was at the top end and perfect for our final stay before heading home. We were really looking forward to staying here, as we had a hectic trip and was looking forward to some luxury before we left. However we did not have a good experience.

When we were checking in, the people at the reception didn't know what was happening. They had trouble communicating and most times I felt that because I was a woman, they wouldn't communicate much with me. When we asked for tourist information, they suggested we take a map and on the last day when my partner was violently sick, they could not give me any doctor information. They mentioned that Internet was available, but it did not work for the 4 days we were there. The worst was when our flights had been changed and I needed to contact the tour operator who was on the mainland, I was told that it was too late (8:00 pm approximately) and that I could not use their phone - even though I was willing to pay. I had to find an Internet Cafe and the owner felt sorry for me and allowed me to use his personal mobile.

Overall, what was supposed to be a superb end to a fantastic Africa trip turned out to be a very stressful end to a fantastic trip.

Please do not expect much from Dhow Palace.

Awesome swimming pool and bedroom! You will love it. FYI: Alcohol is forbidden there. The food was good. Good location in Stone Town. You will like the bathroom too. Also, good customer service. The design is beutiful inside the hotel.
