We chise the Flamingo Guesthouse relying on the suggestion in the Lonely Planet. Upon arriving to Zanzibar we checked the rooms and prices in several guesthouses, but Flamingo was by far the best option for our budget. Stayed for 4 nights in June 2012.
There were 4 of us and we stayed in a 4-bed room with shared bathroom/WC. The room was very basic, but clean. No mosquito-nets were provided - luckily we had our own and there was a place to hang them properly above every bed. Definitely not the most comfortable bed I´ve ever slept in - but you shouldn´t expect it anyway in this kind on budget accommodation.
The shower and WC were generally OK. Could be cleaner and toilet-paper was not always there - bring your own. No hot water - but that was OK considering the air temperature.
The price included breakfast - some fresh fruits, toasts and eggs prepared your way. Breakfast is served on the roof terrace with a good view of Stone Town. We actually liked the breakfasta lthough it was rather basic - but that´s how it is while travelling on a budget:)
The "restaurant" staff was truly nice and helpful. The reception staff was generally friendly as well.
The place is located a little bit away from the central Stone Town - it´s about 5-10 minutes walk to the main restaurants and sightseeings. But we really liked the location - it´s somehow authentic. It is quite easy to get lost on the streets, so try to learn the way back to the guesthouse before dark. Stone Town after dark is not the prettiest place to hang around if you are 4 white younger women - but nothing terrible as well. Just use your common sense.
The windows of our room faced street and in was little bit noisy on weekends - but actually interesting to see local life passing by.
All in all, a nice budget place. Best in the nearby location in its price-range. Clean, friendly and affordable.
