“Good backpacker place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

We chise the Flamingo Guesthouse relying on the suggestion in the Lonely Planet. Upon arriving to Zanzibar we checked the rooms and prices in several guesthouses, but Flamingo was by far the best option for our budget. Stayed for 4 nights in June 2012.

There were 4 of us and we stayed in a 4-bed room with shared bathroom/WC. The room was very basic, but clean. No mosquito-nets were provided - luckily we had our own and there was a place to hang them properly above every bed. Definitely not the most comfortable bed I´ve ever slept in - but you shouldn´t expect it anyway in this kind on budget accommodation.

The shower and WC were generally OK. Could be cleaner and toilet-paper was not always there - bring your own. No hot water - but that was OK considering the air temperature.

The price included breakfast - some fresh fruits, toasts and eggs prepared your way. Breakfast is served on the roof terrace with a good view of Stone Town. We actually liked the breakfasta lthough it was rather basic - but that´s how it is while travelling on a budget:)
The "restaurant" staff was truly nice and helpful. The reception staff was generally friendly as well.

The place is located a little bit away from the central Stone Town - it´s about 5-10 minutes walk to the main restaurants and sightseeings. But we really liked the location - it´s somehow authentic. It is quite easy to get lost on the streets, so try to learn the way back to the guesthouse before dark. Stone Town after dark is not the prettiest place to hang around if you are 4 white younger women - but nothing terrible as well. Just use your common sense.

The windows of our room faced street and in was little bit noisy on weekends - but actually interesting to see local life passing by.

All in all, a nice budget place. Best in the nearby location in its price-range. Clean, friendly and affordable.

“affordable and decent.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

We stayed here for 3 nights and enjoyed our stay though we didn't spend much time in the hostel. Staff were ok. We liked that it was a bit out of the main tourist hub because we got to explore different parts of Stone town but it would not be for everyone. Great bokoboko place around the corner!

“Flamingo Guest House is by far the worst place I ever slept!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

Me and my boyfriend didn’t expect a lot cause it was cheap but what we experienced was absolutely horrifying! I woke up in the middle of the night cause a rat was crawling around on me!! Absolutely terrified, I went to the receptionist who couldn’t care less. He just told me that this could not be possible and that we both must have been dreaming. He didn’t want to give us a new room, no apologies, he wasn’t helpful at all! We somehow managed to move the rat out of the room and to fall asleep again. But, and I am absolutely sure that this is because of the rat, we both got very ill that same night...
Besides that the room was very noisy cause there were windows to both sides of the room, which couldn’t be shut, they were just wholes in the wall covered with mosquito nets. Apparently the mosquito nets were not even working: there were plenty of mosquitos in the room and they also got inside of the mosquito nets which covered the beds.

“Riddled with rats & the staff were so rude.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012

I stayed here during my time in Zanzibar. Ok, so it's cheap and in a good location but the place was disgusting. There were rats crawling over me and my boyfriend in the middle of the night. They got in through a huge hole in the wall of our room which opened out into the corridor where the staff stood talking loudly during the early hours of the morning. When I informed the staff the next morning of the rats, I was told it was impossible and myself and my boyfriend must have been hallucinating. There was no hot water, the bathroom was covered in human hair and dead flies and the bed felt like it was made of bricks.

“Very good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2012

This is a very basic place to stay but if you are looking for a room to stay in a few days it's great. The rooms are v clean, comfortable beds, fans, mozi nets, you can choose ensuite or not (I'd recommend as it's only $15 a night for ensuite incl breakfast). The breakfast is basic but filling... fresh fruit, omlette, plenty of bread... great when it's included in that price! The staff are v laid back and you may have to ask for some loo roll a towel etc but they will bring it. Things could get a little noisy in the evening at weekends. Not for you if you're coming on a luxury holiday but perfect for a budget stay.
