“Definately not a pearl”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

I have to rate this place based on the price charged. I booked through hotels.com and expected way better. This "pearl" has been in the salt water way too long, literally. The bathroom fixtures are all completely coroded away especially the showerhead and holder which was coroded in half to uselessness. The reason is because the water supply is all salt water. The "suite" did have airconditiong and a ceiling fan which is an absolute must in stonetown. The bed was good too, with nice clean linen. The bathroom towels were nice. There was good shampoo and conditioner, but really bad bar soap so add that with the salt water and you don't feel clean. The towels were nice. The room was clean. The staff do a good job with what they have. I suspect a greedy owner, because we looked at another place in stonetown that blew this pearl out of the water. It was luxurious with a rooftop dining area and new elevator amazing breakfast for $90 USD a night. I never bothered to look at the rooms, but based on the lobby and interior the "pearl" would have been clasified as a sea urchin.
The "pearl" has stairs only for up to three floors so this might be an issue for some people. The breakfast was the most basic i ever had a few breads, coffee\tea and a cut up mango and papaya. we were really really disapointed. The price we paid for this place we really felt cheated! The staff are really good, but they seem to have few resources to work with so i feel sorry for them. I think this was an investment by someone and they are trying to suck as much money out of it as possible, because it seems left for dead. I would have paid $30USD a night to stay here.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

We stayed here a few days in early Feb. 2013. I had actually made a mistake and booked a room using Kayak.com for the same dates in January, which we hadn't noticed until we checked in. Luckily the hotel was not full so we got a room anyway and weren't charged any more (as the hotel had gotten its money anyway). I really appreciated the manager for just waving this off. Room was basic but spacious with a nice bed and great mosquito net. Breakfast simple but included excellent fruits (passion fruit, mangoes, papaya). And the location was excellent.

The Pearl of Zanzibar is a safe and friendly place to stay. The hotel is beautiful and clean, the rooms are pretty. The staff is helpful and kind. Also fast and efficient. Breakfast is simple and delecious with lots of fresh fruit, eggs made to order, local specialities. One waiter remembered which jam I like and brought the jar to my table. The night I arrived on January 6, 2013, there was no power for 8 hours, I was given flashlights. One can sit on the entrance stoop and chat with the staff or people who pass by. The Pearl of Zanzibar is a pleasant place to stay. I travel alone and felt perfectly safe and well taken care of.
