“A little retreat in Stone Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

We walked down the busy streets of Stone town and come across the Abyssinian which was a little oasis within the fenced courtyard which was tastefully decorated and peaceful. The food had several options and was quite good and representative of Ethiopian food. One thing that was concerning is that when we pair our bill, the waiter opened the box and quickly pocketed a bill for his tip rather than submitting it with all the payment so that tips can be circulated to all staff. Unsure if employee was just looking for maximum gain or if owner is not fairly distributing or not distribution at all the tips from patrons.

Dear Guest,
First and foremost I would like to thank you for your time you took to write us a feedback. We are glad that you admire our garden as an “Oasis in Stone Town” and our identical Ethiopian food.

Furthermore, the last point in your review, what you saw after you paid your bill made as concerned. We have staffs in the kitchen, cleaners and security guards, without those people the whole enterprise can’t be functional. And that is why our staffs they know our slogan “work together eat together as a team”.
The Management informed all staff members about the incident you mentioned. The whole staff, especially kitchen workers and cleaners were upset, since it is there tip also; the tip box is regular opened, on Monday evening before our off day (Tuesdays), in front of the staff and distributed equally and everyone is happy by what they get from our guest.
The management will take different immediate measures to avoid equal events.
We, management and staff of Abyssinian Maritim, ask our distinguished guests to put the tips direct in the Tip Box by the casher, as it is also mentioned in our Menu.
We thank you again for your review.

With kind regards
Abyssinian Maritim Management

“Great place to discover”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

We try that restaurant because of the atmosphere and the kindness of the people working there and their gentle way to explain what they offer.
The food was excellent, the waiter helped us to decide what to take, the service was inpeccable plus it is a very pleasant place.
A restaurant who should be in all tourists books.

“Excellent and different”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

This was the first experience of Ethiopian food and well worth the trip to discover this on Vuga Roundabout. A lovely garden secludes you from what little traffic exists. The combination of flavours and spices was excellent and the experience on the enormous bread was outstanding. The staff and owner are extremely helpful in steering you through the menu. Only minor complaint was the over cooked lamb otherwise it would have been 5 *

“Delicious, Transcendent, Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

Abyssinian Maritim never fails to amaze. With bursting, unique flavors, beautiful ambiance in the outdoor garden, and wonderful service, this place will draw you back again and again. I'm a regular for the Sunday night "tibs" specials -- mouth-watering grilled beef with rosemary and grilled hot green peppers, tomatoes, and onions eaten with tangy injeera. The injeera here is actually made with rice flour but still delicious, maybe even more so than tef flour!). Wash it down with a few beers and add a few more rounds of tibs, it's the best way to spend a Sunday evening!

But don't just come for the tibs! I'm a huge fan of the vegetarian dishes like the scrumptious chick pea balls stewed in a heady, delicious berbere sauce, it's transcendent! I usually select a whole vegetarian combination platter, including the chick peas, a sweet & savory pumpkin stew, delicious red lentils, and a mixed veg that seems simple (zucchini, carrot, cabbage, potato) but is actually really flavorful and filling. The Doro Wat (chicken & berbere sauce with egg) together with the injeera is spectacular. The ingredients are fresh, all food is made to order, beautifully presented, and abundantly flavorful.

Brekti and her staff are kind, warm, and very welcoming, making it a place where you could come with a huge group (I've attended large parties here and it's been great) in small groups, or even by myself. I love the "spris" classic Ethiopian layered fruit juice that reminds of the ones I enjoyed in Addis, and I've definitely come here for a generous serving of "Firfir" (injeera bread soaked in berbere sauce, either veg or with meat) along with steaming hot cup of fresh Ethiopian coffee, served traditionally.

This place really has it all, and as a break from Swahili or Indian food, it stands out above and beyond the rest in terms of flavor, value, and overall ambiance. With lush garden seating with traditional collective plate or indoor seating surrounded by large-scale prints of the Amharic alphabet, coming to Abyssinian Maritim should not be missed.

“Worth finding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

This restaurant was on the other side of stone town from our hotel but after searching on trip advisor we decided to seek it out. Very glad we did. We had one of the suggested combos towards the back of the menu for tsh35000. Everything in it was delicious, particularly the lentils which were quite like an Indian daal. For those not familiar with Ethiopian food, note that everything is eaten with your hands using the large savoury pancake which the food is served on so best enjoyed with close friends and possibly not for a romantic meal!
