Abyssinian Maritim never fails to amaze. With bursting, unique flavors, beautiful ambiance in the outdoor garden, and wonderful service, this place will draw you back again and again. I'm a regular for the Sunday night "tibs" specials -- mouth-watering grilled beef with rosemary and grilled hot green peppers, tomatoes, and onions eaten with tangy injeera. The injeera here is actually made with rice flour but still delicious, maybe even more so than tef flour!). Wash it down with a few beers and add a few more rounds of tibs, it's the best way to spend a Sunday evening!
But don't just come for the tibs! I'm a huge fan of the vegetarian dishes like the scrumptious chick pea balls stewed in a heady, delicious berbere sauce, it's transcendent! I usually select a whole vegetarian combination platter, including the chick peas, a sweet & savory pumpkin stew, delicious red lentils, and a mixed veg that seems simple (zucchini, carrot, cabbage, potato) but is actually really flavorful and filling. The Doro Wat (chicken & berbere sauce with egg) together with the injeera is spectacular. The ingredients are fresh, all food is made to order, beautifully presented, and abundantly flavorful.
Brekti and her staff are kind, warm, and very welcoming, making it a place where you could come with a huge group (I've attended large parties here and it's been great) in small groups, or even by myself. I love the "spris" classic Ethiopian layered fruit juice that reminds of the ones I enjoyed in Addis, and I've definitely come here for a generous serving of "Firfir" (injeera bread soaked in berbere sauce, either veg or with meat) along with steaming hot cup of fresh Ethiopian coffee, served traditionally.
This place really has it all, and as a break from Swahili or Indian food, it stands out above and beyond the rest in terms of flavor, value, and overall ambiance. With lush garden seating with traditional collective plate or indoor seating surrounded by large-scale prints of the Amharic alphabet, coming to Abyssinian Maritim should not be missed.
