Had read good reviews of Lou Lou's so decided to book a table for dinner. Arrived at 7pm to find we were the only people there. I understand that lots of people watch the sunset before dinner so might eat later, sunset was around 6 so expected to be more than just us there. Anyway, we were made to feel welcome and given our choice of table. Ordered drinks and our meals when all of a sudden the power went out. Not unusual for Zanzibar so we simple waited by the light of the battery powered candle for it to come back on. Finally, after half an hour it came back and we were promptly served our drinks and given a complimentary appetizer while we waited for our first course. A nice touch!
I had ordered Shrimp Croquettes wish sounded fantastic. They arrived and were still cold and raw on the inside. Sent them back and they returned, almost exactly as I had left them on the plate. Cut in half and partly eaten. Had obviously been microwaved as they were at least hot, but now soggy and very unappetizing. Left most of them.
Next, my wife and I had ordered fillet steaks in peppercorn sauce. Probably not the ideal choice in Zanzibar but we both really felt like a steak after 2 weeks of local food while on safari in Kenya. Figured with the good reviews it would be ok though. Big mistake. Came out dry and stringy, even though we'd ordered them medium rare. Was tough and had obviously been frozen and defrosted. Could only manage to eat about half, not because they were large serves, but because it tasted so bad.
Even though we'd been looking forward to the much raved about chocolate mousse, decided to cut our losses and leave without dessert or coffee. By this stage, there was 1 other couple and a family of 4 dining there. Pretty poor recommendation for a supposedly high class restaurant at 9pm. Oh, and the next day we both had upset stomachs and eventually had to take medication to stop the rush to the bathroom.

I would like to thank you for having eaten at Loulou Zanzibar and am very sorry that you had a bad experience. I fully agree that the prawns croquette should have been replaced completely and not warmed-up and I took the necessary measures that this does not happen again.
Concerning the meat we serve, all the meat which we purchase comes from Zambia and has, indeed, been frozen because I leave to your imagination the consequences that could happen during the transport under African climate if it would be fresh. It does happen, once in a while, that some of it does not respond to the quality we expect but believe me that it is impossible the see it from the outside although we do our very best to check it accurately.
I am surprised to read that you have been waiting half an hour in the dark; every single night the power is cut during 30 min in the entire Stone Town area, from 18:30 until 19:00 and we "always" switch immediately our generator on during that time and I cannot imagine why we should have made an exception during you visit.
October is low season here in Zanzibar and we would definitely be delighted to have our restaurant welcoming more guests, but you came in the middle of the week when it is at the quietest.
I reiterate our apologies that you were disappointed that particular night and should you steps bring you back to Zanzibar, we would gladly offer you the chocolate mousse you skipped, even if you limit your visit to Loulou Restaurant just to that.
