“Good room next to a mosque”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

PRO:
Clean room with comfortable bed
clean shared bath with no waiting
Decent breakfast served quickly
Short walk to market
Nice manager

CON:
No a/c available
The mosque was LOUD at 5am (however, the early rising allowed me to catch the morning market being set up, which was a cool photo opportunity)

re: the price... after traveling in Thailand, it felt like a total rip off. But after looking around Stone Town, it was actually a good price. Good for a night or two, but not for much longer.

Rooms were nice enough, but communal bathrooms were absolutely filthy and extremely smelly to the extent that they were entirely unusable. No toilet roll, the toilet seats were constantly wet and nothing was cleaned for the entire 3 days that we spent there. Breakfast was VERY slow, we had to ask for bread, tea and coffee, and had to stand as there weren't enough tables and chairs for everyone. Many people left without breakfast as they didn't have time to wait. We had booked online on hostel bookers at their discounted price, however when it came to paying they insisted we owed the standard rate at a very dubious exchange rate - despite our print out documentation of the booking and deposit. Very unpleasant staff. There are MUCH better places to stay at the same price in a much better location.

Room Tip: Don't bother

Room was fine n decent for the price but the bathrooms were disgusting and getting toilet roll was near impossible! Right next to mosque so call to prayer at 5 am very loud!
No real communal area, wifi poor and the staff can't cope if they have more than 4 guests. Breakfast was slow n the didn't have anywhere for us to sit to eat it!
Nowhere is very far away in stone town but it's the furthest u can get away. Still walking distance but road dark n dubious at night for females.

Very nice safe hotel for a short stop in stone town , old stone town and markets are 7min by foot , or by taxi for 2$ the staff is very nice and helpful, I won't recommend it for long term stays as the rooms don't have shelfs to put your things no hooks or hangers of any kind. The rooms are nice and reasonable clean for Zanzibari standards , as a fact there is no air condition but fans. Breakfast is included, served with a smile. No smoking in the building , bring lots of mosquito repellent .

Pros: Location - slightly outside of the core but near Shangani which is a popular road for Westerners, Nice Staff - friendly and helpful, liked that they always knew my name, Free Airport pickup - driver was waiting at airport with a sign for the hotel even though flight was nearly 2 hours late from DAR. Cons: Price $40/night with AC and breakfast is a good price but $10 more down the street and you get TV/fridge in room and ensuite bathroom and it's much nicer (plus the rates for Mnazi were cheaper on hostelbookers than contacting direct). I had laundry done and it was outrageously expensive, nearly $20 and multiple items came back dirty (though I didn't tell management because what was the point - a few dollars knocked off maybe?)

Room Tip: An AC is practically a requirement as the fan just doesn't give enough circulation with the high...

Maniz house is one of the most welcoming places I have ever been to.
The staff is very helpful and friendly, and they really go the extra mile to make their guests happy. They helped us organise trips on the island, they made sure we get the best prices possible as it is quite easy to be tricked when you are a tourist, they even checked on us to see if we are safe, if we did not get back on time. I also had some issue with my debit card, and due to their help I managed to get it back on the same day. I will be forever grateful.
The rooms were very tidy, and the beds were fantastic, I felt like a princess. Delicious breakfast, and of course the “famous Rico Juice”.
Mnazi house is the perfect mix, between comfort, good value, safety and excellent customer service. I would definitely recommend it to all my friends, and I hope to return there one day.

The rooms here are simple, but tastefully appointed and clean, the bed was comfortable and the AC was a blessing. The shared bathrooms were also kept clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. My only cautionary note would be that Mnazi is slightly out of the main hub of Stowntown. For people travelling together this is no problem at all and actually the location just out of the main touristy area has its benefits. However, for women travelling alone, you might want to consider using taxi drivers known to the hotel if you are coming back late at night. The hotel helped me arrange this on a couple of occasions and this worked well. The breakfast served in the mornings (consisting of fruit, eggs, toast, juice and tea) was simple but did the job. Overall, I think this is a quality, good value option for those travelling on a budget.
