“very nice place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

We had a really great stay at this hotel. The rooms were very comfortable, the showers excellent, and the decor beautiful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast in the pretty dining room was delightful. Our room was a bit noisy as some of the doors/windows did not close completely, but nothing earplugs couldn't fix! Especially the 5 am call to prayer-I would definitely recommend earplugs unless you are planning to get up for prayer! I have never even been to Africa before, so everything was new to us, and we knew nothing about this hotel, and it ended up being a really a nice place to stay. We highly recommend it.

Dear guests,
Many thanks for your very nice comments. Your satisfaction makes us content.
We are all committed to serve you in the best way and to make you happy during your stay in Kholle House.
It is a fact that mosques are all around Kholle House and the muezzin call at 5 pm is very close. But it is very difficult to escape from it in Stone Own a rather tiny city with more than 40 mosques inside it's limits.
Welcome back as soon as possible!
Sincerely,
Francis

Lovely little gem of a hotel. We were transferred there because 236 Hurumzi was closed, and I can't imagine it would have been any better. I was in room 12, which was off the street and quiet, with its own veranda. Excellent air conditioning (a bonus in hot, humid Zanzibar) and polite, helpful staff. Decor is straight out of the Arabian nights, very romantic, and I loved sitting up at the Tea House listening to the sounds of the city. It is near the ferry terminal, which can be a minus if you're facing the street noise, but on the plus side it makes it easy to find in the maze of Zanzibar internal streets. I'd love to stay here again!

Room Tip: See above - ask for an inside room off the area facing the ferry terminal

We have visited Zanzibar a number of times and decided we wanted a change from the Serena (great but expensive) or the Africa House. We found the Kholle House on the Internet and were not disappointed. The hotel is simple swahili style. Our room could have been a bit bigger, but that was not an issue for us as it was for only one night. The staff were great -our request to get someone to come to the hotel to 'henna tattoo' my wife rather than go and find someone in town has fixed in moments and with great results - pleasant and helpful. There is a small garden and a pool - very relaxing especially given the location in the middle of town ( the hotel is very close to. Mercury's a great place for sundowner's, drinks and not bad music). We will be back and I'd recommend it

Found this on Agoda.com and stayed there for a day and was positive surprised. It's a bit like travelling back in time. The design of the hotel is traditional and very, very well done. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and reliable. Good hotel facilities and restaurant, breakfast a la carte, good quality and catering to western tourists. Will book again and can truly recommend!

We stayed here for two nights before hitting the beach in Zanzibar as we wanted to explore Stone Town a bit. The hotel was in the middle of renovations and seemed empty. The rooms were well-kept and the decor is gorgeous. However, it seems a bit expensive in comparison to other properties in the area without the amenities you might expect. We were pleased to be on the roof level but disappointed to find that the rooftop terrace was not set up (the cushions weren't out). The staff were friendly and prompt in e-mail replies but not overly helpful once we arrived - we inquired about a bar and were told "We have some drinks". We asked about booking a trip to Prison Island and the staff didn't get back to us. We decided to book a massage which the hotel advertises and it was quite an ordeal to make it happen. All in all, a pretty place but room for improvement.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are beautifully decorated so it might be a better bang for your buck if you choose...

Dear Guests

Appreciated the time taken for rating your stay with us.

Your comments are of great value, thus we are sorry indeed where we did not succeed to meet your requirements. We are happy to know what you enjoyed at Kholle House.

Yes the hotel was under renovation as you stayed with us during the low season. Nevertheless, we have tried our best to ensure guest comfort during this period.
Especially by offering discounts and upgrades whenever possible.

Due to the heavy rain showers (it is the monsoon period) you found the tea house not well set up or welcoming and for the same reason there was a short delay for our masseur to arrive on time. Transport becomes extremely tough for our staff or outsourced capacities when it rains in Stone Town.

Actually, we had confirmed your island trip for 11am but no one turned up, we took it as a day taken easy.

Once again thank you for your comments we shall put extra efforts to strive for the best.

Sincerely,

Francis

The staff are switched on, informative and helpful. The decor creates a wonderful ambience and the rooms are spotlessly clean. I cannot recommend this place enough, 10/10. Don't worry too much about the location, the walk to the main streets is a matter of minutes.

What a beautiful building tucked out of the way in Stone Town! Simply gorgeous interior - very unique feeling. Our rooms were quite small, but certainly adequate for our needs, and had such a romantic, antique feel that we felt like we were in another time and place! There was a lovely balcony with table and chairs just outside our rooms (numbers 21 and 22 I believe) which we used to extend our living space. Just up another set of stairs from the balcony was a sweet sitting area with cushions and netting and a fabulous view of the city.

The pool was also small but was just the thing to cool down from the heat and humidity. Poolside drink service was excellent - attentive without being intrusive. It was easy to forget the bustle and crowds just outside the walls of our little palace!

Special mention must be made about the lovely lady at the front desk when we checked in. She went out of her way to welcome us, all while dealing with another large family arriving, as well as one checking out. Then, when I needed to find a cash machine that would accept my Visa card, she found 2 that would work, called a taxi for me, paid for it herself (so that I wouldn't get charged a tourist rate) and made sure he brought me back, all the while keeping an ear out for my kids, should they need anything! And all this was done when the poor woman was trying to eat some lunch!

The air conditioning unit in my room was not working properly when I arrived but it was attended to promptly, and was working before we were done our lunch at the nearby classic, Mercury's Restaurant.

The only negatives that I experienced were the breakfast that was entirely uninspiring (food bland and served cold); the proximity to the tower at the mosque which was startlingly loud at 5 in the morning; and the difficulty finding it amongst the twisting, winding little back alleys! I would certainly consider staying here again if we ever go back to Stonetown.

Zanzibar airport and Dar es Salaam airport – ferry dock• Island tours and sea activities assistanceKholle House in the heart of Stone Town is an historical and authentic house build in 1860 which belonged to Princess Kholle. Sister of Sayyid Sultan bin Bargash and Princess Salme. The house has probably been there as a showcase from their crystal collection and porcelain. After the revolution in 1964 the house was confiscated and occupied by several families, this period caused severe damages in the house. Three years of restoration has bring us the pleasure to present our town beloved house, the work done in connection with historical monuments and in full respect with the construction methods in the time (coral rubble, lime, mangrove beams, marble…). With an noble and austere façade the building is typically Omani Arabic style while the garden has more Indo-Victorian fantasy rhythms. This style is featured on the covers of the old dispensary which faces Kholle House and was restored by the Ada Khan Foundation. ... more   less
