“Great escape from busy stone town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

Ideal location in front of the Fhordani Night food market and near the fort and central area in Stone town. Walk in from the madness of the narrow streets and the vast cool rooms are a sanctuary! Lovely hotel still with the feeling of a sultans palace. Rooms are spacious and airconditioned Didnt eat there, but the restaurant had lovely views and a cool breeze from the sea. the palace has been beautifully restored. Perfect spot for your Stone Town stay.

Room Tip: Family rooms have very steep stairs going upstairs, which is not ideal for toddlers

Very friendly staff always willing to help. The hotel is really beautiful, recently renovated, looking like a Moroccan riad. There is a beautiful view from the roof terrace where the restaurant is.
We had been upgraded to the 2-storey-room, it's really nice although we could not really enjoy the space of it.
The hotel is I think ideally located close to the sea shore, next to the house of wonders.
We definitely recommend this place!

The hotel is very well appointed, warmly decorated, and the restaurant is excellent. A very good choice for Zanzibar.

The view from the rooftop restaurant is very, very nice.

The food is Italian, and prepared with a lot of care and attention to detail. A very enjoyable stay.

We had three fantastic nights at the Mashariki Palace Hotel. It is a fabulous building architecturally and has been renovated with great care and style. You could sit and enjoy the view from the upstairs bar/restaurant for hours, and the evening food was excellent - certainly not cheap, but very enjoyable.

The hotel is in a great location overlooking the water and Forodhani Gardens and it was an easy stroll through Hurumzi to other areas of Zanzibar. We felt more comfortable walking along the road following the coast at night instead of through the lanes and alleyways as it was off season and fairly quiet. Alas, the spa was closed during our visit. Wifi was a little intermittent due to the thickness of the walls, but it just meant you had another reason to visit the upstairs bar. Would highly recommend! Enjoy!

I stayed in this hotel for two nights with my colleagues and everything was so brilliant: The staffs were more than friendly especially Kamis at the front desk. I like the way he explained all the history of the palace and Stone Town to us upon arrival while enjoying hibiscus juice. He took us to very pleasant beaches outside the Stone Town and he was there to reply to all our queries. One day we went to eat outside in one local restaurant inside Stone Town and i got stomach upset but when we got back to the palace Kamis was there to help me. He asked the kitchen staff to boil local medicine for me and I got better as soon as I had it. I will be damned if I don’t appreciate his efforts. The food particularly dinner and general services of the hotel was very fantastic even though the breakfast was less. I’m sorry to say this but the female director and a slim lady at the reception did not look very nice to us. The rooms were very chic and the one which one of my colleagues had was so large with incredible high ceiling. When I go back to Stone Town another time I will request for the room which my friend had.

Thanks to the recommendations of fellow tripadvisors, I stayed at the Mashariki Palace Hotel and was very pleased with the hotel. The hotel is very unique and the rooms were very spacious. The bathrooms were incredibly large and the bed was comfortable. The room includes a refridgerator, air conditioning, TV, and there is mosquito netting around the bed. The staff was very helpful and attentive to my needs, especially the manager of the hotel. She went above and beyond to provide recommendations for activities and to make sure that I had everything that I needed. The view from the roof terrace provided a very pleasant atmosphere and I enjoyed watching the sunset while enjoying the scrumptious dinner at the hotel. The hotel only contains about 20 rooms so it is very peaceful. The breakfast and lunch were also very good. The hotel is located near the park, so it was easy to access the evening market. It is located about a 5 minute walk to the popular tourist shops. I would not recommend walking around the side streets unless you are familiar with the layout of the town. It is easy to get lost! Although I felt safe walking around on my own, I was happy to see the security in front the gate at night. The hotel is located behind a school, so you may need assistance walking to the hotel itself since cars are unable to park in front of it. Also, there is a rooster close by that may wake you up early in the morning depending on which room you are in. As for activities, I highly recommend that you visit a spice farm. I enjoyed learning about the different spices and seeing all of the various fruits that grow in the area. Ali Baba, my tour guide, was very familiar with the spice farm and provided a lot of interesting information about spices. I also enjoyed the sunset cruise and visiting Prisoner's Island.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Stone Town, Zanzibar, exotic, magic and still evokes its incredible past of sultans, missionaries, traders, adventurers and explorers. These magical islands off the Swahili East African Coast have been a real magnet since time immemorial and all those who passed by left their marks. Stone Town, on the Unguja Island, for a certain period of time was even the capital of the Omani Empire. Everywhere you can still see and feel the cultural and architectural fusions echoing Persian, Arabian, Indian, Colonial and African influences. Stone Town today is home to the "new" Mashariki Palace Hotel. Mashariki, which means "east" in Kiswahili, according to the old documents seems to derive its name from its position, in fact of all the sultan's palaces it was the one located more to the east (the Sultan residence was in the near-by palace known as Beit-al-Sahel). Constructed by the first sultan of Zanzibar approximately 200 years ago, Mashariki Palace served as the residence of the Imam, the Sultan's first religious counselor. The building hosting the boutique hotel has now been carefully restored as per the original plan in order to reflect the antique glory and magnificence. The Mashariki Palace Hotel is a privileged residence for those travelers favoring refined hospitality in a charming setting. When you wander through the ancient corridors, your thoughts naturally drift to the past splendors of a lost era and to the secret memories of a bygone time ... all jealously preserved by its thick walls. Relaxing on the spacious terrace while overlooking the tropical seafront gardens, the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean, and the Old Town; mosques, churches, temples, palaces and simple homes all around you. You cannot help wondering about the many generations of sailors who have come and gone with the Kusi and the Kaskazi; the monsoon winds allowing all journeys across the ocean. As the sound of the muezzin calling to prayer mingles with the laughter of children at play, and as the red sun sets over the sea while the starry African night advances, the live pulse of this vibrant town becomes so strong that past and present become but one. The legend of One Thousand and One nights - is alive in Mashariki Palace Hotel, Zanzibar ... more   less
