“Lovely place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

From the bustle of Stone Town the Mashariki provided a wonderfully calm place to unwind and relax. The decor is minimalist and cool and everything is furnished to a very high standard. The rooftop bar overlooks the sea and is a great place for a sundowner and dinner. As honeymooners we were given a rooftop room with a private balcony. Highly recommended.

Great property and better service. Def grab a drink at the roof top bar and watch the sunset...unreal. Stone Town is a little shady/run down but this was a very pleasant escape from all the crazies. Went in "off-season" and got upgraded to huge room, great stay!

Room Tip: ask! they were very good about relocated me away from the noisy bar.

We booked this hotel based on a previous visit by a family member who was also travelling with us.

I booked the hotel directly and had prompt responses to my questions. The booking process was very smooth and there was no problem with making the arrangements directly rather than through an agent.

When we arrived we were warmly welcomed as return guests. The room we were allocated had the most amazing view. Situated on the top floor we looked out over the local school and House of Wonders to the sea. Little touches like fresh fruit and water (bottled) and a welcome note make for a sense of being more than just another arrival. All the staff were so pleasant and hospitable...even the poor man who carried our luggage up all those stairs. Yes, they were quite a climb, being not as fit as we should be, but at least we didn't have to go further for afternoon coffee/drinks or dinner.

The other half of our party had a twin room which they were very happy with, and a balcony overlooking the central courtyard.

The design of the hotel is just so elegant and it's astonishing to see from their facebook pages, just how rundown it was before renovation. Now it is a vision of luxurious style, yet simple not flashy. Attention to detail extends to the little things that are often overlooked including each day's dinner menu rolled up with ribbon on the desk.

Michela, the manager, welcomed us shortly after arrival and we were impressed that she spoke to all her guests checking they were comfortable.

Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice each morning, and my husband loved that he could get an afternoon coffee just outside the door when he felt like it.

On the morning we left the reception staff followed up the arrival of the car that we had organised for the beach segment of our holiday. This kind of initiative is one of the things that shows attention to detail.

The hotel is also convenient for shopping and sight-seeing, though you will inevitably get lost on a regular basis in Stone Town's intriguing laneways.

We would happily stay here again if we were ever in Zanzibar.

Room Tip: Ask for a lower floor if you really can't manage the stairs, but then the restaurant would be a...

We booked Mashariki Palace through Imagine Africa for 2 nights in the middle of our honeymoon. We wanted a characterful and convenient hotel from which to explore Stone Town. What we got was a stylish, calm oasis right in the heart of the town. Converted from a former palace, the hotel’s Arabic architecture is beautiful and the stunning roof terrace is an amazing place to watch the sun go down over the sea. Being on honeymoon they put us in a gorgeous room occupying the highest floor in the hotel and made us feel special with surprises throughout our stay. The hotel restaurant doesn’t do justice to its food – although there are lots of places to eat in Stone Town , the Italian/African rooftop restaurant at Mashariki seemed to be one of the best of all!

We landed at Mashariki after 11 days on safari in Uganda and it was perfect. The staff is welcoming and helpful and our room was large, beautiful and comfortable. It was the little things: great sheets, plenty of electrical outlets, strong wifi. We only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was great and we loved the morning view over Stone Town. The staff was v. helpful in arranging reservations and transportation, even finding a neighborhood kid to escort us to a restaurant that was hard to find. Everything we did was walkable from the hotel, too.

We had a lovely stay at this hotel. Great location, good breakfast spread and the staff added lots of special little touches for our honeymoon - including free sparkling wine and some little gifts, left in our room. With great views, the balconies and the restaurant are great spots from which to observe the town from afar. Lack of elevators/ abundance of stairs will make this hotel unsuitable for certain guests however.

Stayed 4 nites in this beautiful and stylish boutique property , once sultan of omans minor palace . Looked through other top rated hotels while there and felt I made the right choice . The manager Mikhaela was very helpful and friendly . Do the guided walk before venturing on your own . We went diving as well . Loved it, great atmospheric streets out of filmsets! Loved the terrace at mashariki but food could improve .

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Stone Town, Zanzibar, exotic, magic and still evokes its incredible past of sultans, missionaries, traders, adventurers and explorers. These magical islands off the Swahili East African Coast have been a real magnet since time immemorial and all those who passed by left their marks. Stone Town, on the Unguja Island, for a certain period of time was even the capital of the Omani Empire. Everywhere you can still see and feel the cultural and architectural fusions echoing Persian, Arabian, Indian, Colonial and African influences. Stone Town today is home to the "new" Mashariki Palace Hotel. Mashariki, which means "east" in Kiswahili, according to the old documents seems to derive its name from its position, in fact of all the sultan's palaces it was the one located more to the east (the Sultan residence was in the near-by palace known as Beit-al-Sahel). Constructed by the first sultan of Zanzibar approximately 200 years ago, Mashariki Palace served as the residence of the Imam, the Sultan's first religious counselor. The building hosting the boutique hotel has now been carefully restored as per the original plan in order to reflect the antique glory and magnificence. The Mashariki Palace Hotel is a privileged residence for those travelers favoring refined hospitality in a charming setting. When you wander through the ancient corridors, your thoughts naturally drift to the past splendors of a lost era and to the secret memories of a bygone time ... all jealously preserved by its thick walls. Relaxing on the spacious terrace while overlooking the tropical seafront gardens, the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean, and the Old Town; mosques, churches, temples, palaces and simple homes all around you. You cannot help wondering about the many generations of sailors who have come and gone with the Kusi and the Kaskazi; the monsoon winds allowing all journeys across the ocean. As the sound of the muezzin calling to prayer mingles with the laughter of children at play, and as the red sun sets over the sea while the starry African night advances, the live pulse of this vibrant town becomes so strong that past and present become but one. The legend of One Thousand and One nights - is alive in Mashariki Palace Hotel, Zanzibar ... more   less
