“Best hotel in stone town for me”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013 via mobile

Stayed 4 nites in this beautiful and stylish boutique property , once sultan of omans minor palace . Looked through other top rated hotels while there and felt I made the right choice . The manager Mikhaela was very helpful and friendly . Do the guided walk before venturing on your own . We went diving as well . Loved it, great atmospheric streets out of filmsets! Loved the terrace at mashariki but food could improve .

We stayed here for one night. The hotel has been beautifully renovated and evokes memories of the days when the Sultans ruled Zanzibar. The rooms are very comfortable a little noisy from the street at night but that's to be expected. The roof top terrace was lovely for meals and complimentary afternoon tea is served daily.
The hotel is in a great location situated next to the House of Wonders and very easy for exploring the old town.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful, our flight home wasn't until later in the day but we were able to keep our room until we checked out at 5pm. They also allowed us to print our boarding passes for our Nairobi flights which certainly helped with the chaos caused by the fire there.

We arrived with our two children after booking through Expedia and there had been some problem in that we thought we'd booked a room with two twin beds and one double for a family of four but, for some reason, Expedia sent it through as a room for only two of us. The management were amazing! When they realized what had happened and that they only had a room with a double bed and one twin for us, they went out of their way to make sure we had what we needed and even asked us if we wanted a separate room for the children. Eventually, they came and set up another twin bed for our son while we were at dinner. The hotel itself is stunningly beautiful, the food excellent and the staff very nice and very attentive. I couldn't recommend it enough and would definitely stay there when I visit Stone Town again.

We arrived at the Mashariki to be disappointed with the room we had been given, so Luiza showed us 4 other rooms which did not suit as they were queen beds and it was twin that we (two lady friends) had booked so we ended up with the original room that was booked for us.Luiza could not have been more gracious and understanding,so after a lovely afternoon tea we settled in to our room no.1ground floor. The resturant on the roof top was majestic very peaceful for breakfast and the view to the water over the roof tops beautiful. We had dinner in this resturant the last night of our holiday and it was special with good menu & excellent service (although our waiter needs to have camera lessons as we have no photo to remind us of the night)We left the next am in a bit of a hurry as our flight to Dar Es Salem had been cancelled and we had to catch the earlier one,we planned to relax in the picturesque courtyard garden outside our room, but that did not happen ...thank you Michaela and Luiza and your excellent staff at Mashariki.xAnnette

Our three days in Zanzibar were fantastic! The Mashariki Palace was a very large part of that. Great Location, wonderful 4 year renovation to make a great facility. The real Gem of the Mashariki is the General Manager. The Ultimate concierge. More importantly she has hired a staff with an aptitude and ability for hospitality service. Then she has trained them to give the penultimate service. Forget the few problems with communication in multiple languages when if they do not understand they get someone who can converse in that language, the service from calling cabs, re-confirming airline tickets, making reservations, giving advice and directions for local addresses, handling outings or whatever gives you an army of concierges with the General Manager at the top or the heap.

Well done, we will be back and also refer your wonderful operation.

Room Tip: Do not be afraid to upgrade. Increase is price is more than matched by quality and size of the room

Mashariki Palace is a stunning hotel, a beautifully restored old palace. It is owned by an Italian architect who designed it stunningly, with beautiful old features combined with modern simplicity. We had an amazing room wit 5-6m high ceilings, an beautiful 4 poster bed, which was incredibly comfortable.
The roof top terrace is great to watch the sunset - the hotel offered free tea in the afternoon, and it is a great place to watch the world go by.
We had dinner on the roof, and the food was some of the best we had in Tanzania at a very reasonable price.
The location is right in the middle of Stone Town, everything is easy walking distance from here.
The staff was super friendly and very helpful.
The only criticism I would have is that when we wanted to travel up north, they wanted to book as a taxi which was twice the price we paid to a normal cab (same for the airport transfer).

It is truly rewarding to read your enthusiastic comments of appreciation for the particular architecture of the hotel and for our services. I am very glad that you enjoyed your stay at Mashariki
About the transport I would just like to point out that, to give security to our guests we usually work with local agencies, which provide us with cars regularly insured and registered as passengers transport.
Thank you very much and “Karibu tena” (welcome again) from all the staff and myself.

A very charming place with very nice hosts, an italian couple from Luca. Very well located in Stone Town. The rooms are impecable, spacious and with extreme good taste as well as the rest of the hotel, an old palace that's been reconstructed almost from ruins. I just think that it is a bit overpriced considering the other alternatives available. Perhaps they could at least improve something, so it could make the price more acceptable (starting with the breakfast, for instance).
